Nothing could be more unfortunate for a commentator than being diagnosed with throat cancer. Dick Vitale not only overcame cancer once but thrice in the 84 years of his life. His mentality to “fight like hell” is one trait he’s known for, apart from his 41-year career as a pro sports commentator. Hopefully, the sports broadcasting Hall of Famer has a long life ahead of him.

Christmas might have come early for the 84-year-old ESPN commentator as he became cancer-free once again. Seeing such a cherished personality beat the odds and continue his everyday life with a newfound zeal is excellent. He announced the good news on X, formerly known as Twitter. After six weeks of radiation therapy, he might return behind the mic again.

The Hall of Fame broadcaster just announced on X that he is cancer-free and checked with his oncologist. Also, his bloodwork shows no unusual activity as his PET scan returned clean. He thanked all those who have supported him in his turbulent times.

“Santa Claus came early for me & my family. Just was on the phone with Dr Rick Brown (my oncologist) Dr Ken Meredith (bloodwork) They gave me super news that the PET SCAN was clean (NO CANCER) & my bloodwork was all very good. To many of you I send ️ & THANK YOU for ur 🙏🙏🙏!” wrote Vitale on X.

This has been Vitale’s third battle with cancer that he has miraculously beaten in three years. Around July, he was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer (a form of throat cancer), which required six weeks of radiation therapy. Vitale recently tweeted, “Though I was disappointed with the pathology report, I plan on winning this battle like I did vs Melanoma & Lymphoma!”

He also said“I plan to fight like hell to be ready to call games when the college hoops season tips off in the Fall.”

It was August 2021 when Vitale was first undergoing the treatment to remove a melanoma. The bad luck didn’t stop there for the broadcaster, as in the following October, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the lymph system. Later that December, he was diagnosed with pre-cancerous dysplasia, which took away his voice. He was announced cancer-free back in August 2022.

A man like him inspires confidence and a will to fight amongst many going through the same conditions. Beating cancer multiple times at this age is something that might not come easily for many. However, as he said, Christmas came early for him, and he couldn’t have received a better gift from Santa this year.
