Patrick Mahomes finds his new passion! The Kansas City Chiefs QB is currently enjoying a month-long holiday in Europe. However, amid the vacation, Mahomes isn’t suppressing his inner sports fan. After showing support for the MLB side Kansas City Royals, Mahomes seemingly has found his new favorite tournament and it ain’t football – at least not the American one!

The tournament in question is the UEFA Euros 2024. It is a soccer tournament where the best teams in Europe play with each other to determine the best on the continent. On July 10, Spain took on France in the first semi-final of the tournament, and what a match it was! After R. Kolo Muani opened the scoring for France, the 16-year-old Spanish wonder-kid Lamine Yamal equalized for his country with a worldie! To add to the Kylian Mbappé-led team’s misery, Dani Olmo put Spain ahead 2-1 before half-time. With all the action, it looks like Mahomes was mesmerized!

On his X (formerly Twitter) account, the three-time Super Bowl winner wrote, “I know I’m late to it! But watching Euros in Europe made me a lifetime fan of the tournament!!” While he may be watching soccer in Europe for the first time, Mahomes’ relationship with soccer is nothing new.

The 28-year-old American football star is married to Brittany Mahomes, a former soccer player. Brittany played soccer throughout her high school and college career before settling down with the love of her life. Though NFL Wag doesn’t play anymore, the mother of two is committed to making soccer a viable sport for women across America.

The Mahomes family deserves a lot of credit for improving the grassroots structures of women’s soccer. After Pat and Brittany Mahomes bought a stake at KC Current in 2022, the team got a $117 million stadium. It is a historic accomplishment as KC Current became the first NWSL team to have a stadium built for them.

At the Time 100 Gala in May 2024, Patrick Mahomes claimed that a “new era” was dawning and said he was “working hard to grow women’s soccer” along with his wife Brittany. The move has helped a lot of female soccer players make a living off playing the sport professionally. In June 2024, KC Currents forward Michelle Cooper said, “The importance of women’s sports is massive because we are able to now make a living wage off of it and use it as our job.”

Equal Wage is something that USNWT legend Alex Morgan has been fighting for. According to a CNN report, female soccer players only made 25 cents for every dollar that a male player made during the 2023 World Cup. Though there is a long way to go, it’s a big improvement compared to the eight cents for every dollar ratio in the 2019 Women’s World Cup. On top of that, Mahomes’ step-sister Zoe is also an aspiring soccer player. With Brittany and Patrick Mahomes backing the sport, young athletes like Zoe Mahomes can pursue their dreams!
