The 2023 Super Bowl loss has affected the San Francisco franchise from the inside out. However, they will be trying their luck once again to lift Lombardi in the 2024 season. And hence, they aren’t committed to the quarterback Brock Purdy yet.
Purdy has one more season left in his contract. He is waiting for a contract extension, but he might have to earn a Super Bowl this time. If Mr. Irrelevant brings the trophy home, he would, of course, get his reward in terms of extension. However, if he fails to do so, the young QB might end up in trouble. And that’s a matter of discussion, which SI reporter Grant Cohn tried to delve into recently.
Will the 49ers trade Brock Purdy?

In a recent episode of his channel, Grant Cohn discussed how the 49ers handle player negotiations, using Aiyuk as an example. He considered how they might approach Brock Purdy’s contract next year. Cohn explained that the 49ers have been reluctant to give Aiyuk a big contract because, despite his talent and contributions, the team doesn’t pass as much. They prefer to run the ball making a high investment in a wide receiver less justifiable. The team has leverage over Aiyuk, being able to offer less than his market value and still keep him under contract.
He explained, “They felt uncomfortable paying Brandon Aiyuk….because Brandon wants what he can get in the open market, but they also tried to trade him, they took calls during the draft, turns out no team was willing to trade a first-round pick for Brandon Aiyuk.” Applying this approach to Purdy, Cohn speculated that even if Purdy has another great season, the 49ers might not rush to make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks. Cohn mentioned, “It is going to be different if Purdy has another MVP caliber season statistically and then goes to the playoffs and doesn’t win the Super Bowl, Kyle might start to think, well maybe we could flip him for a first overall, [or] maybe we could flip him for a quarterback who truly is Elite.”

Is Kyle Shanahan using Brock Purdy as a scapegoat for the 49ers' Super Bowl loss?

In addition to that, Cohn suggested that the 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, might be skeptical about paying Purdy top dollar unless he proves to be indispensable. According to the reporter, the team could use their financial flexibility to maintain a strong roster rather than committing a significant portion of their salary cap to one player.
Well, it remains to be seen what the 49ers do with Purdy as well as Aiyuk’s contract in the future. For now, one thing is certain: the clouds are looming over the 49ers quarterback, as all eyes are on the Super Bowl this time.

Dak Prescott is seen to replace the 49ers Brock Purdy if they are traded?
Brock Purdy, the last pick of the 2022 draft, is set for a big contract extension after a stellar season, leading the Niners to the NFC top seed and near a Super Bowl win. However, if Purdy struggles this season, the 49ers might not extend his contract. They have a history of moving on quarterbacks, like Jimmy Garoppolo, who declined under Shanahan’s scheme. Currently, a potential trade scenario involves Dak Prescott on top, who is also due for a costly extension. If the Cowboys lose confidence in him, and the 49ers seek to maximize their aging roster, a trade during training camp could happen. This would allow the 49ers to gain draft capital and potentially find a better quarterback fit, while the Cowboys might prefer investing in a younger, proven winner like Purdy.
Besides Prescott, other quarterbacks such as Justin Herbert, and Aidan O’Connell (if he improves stats-wise) are considered as other options. The 49ers might consider a bold move by trading for Herbert, which could be a significant decision for the team. However, such a trade would likely wait until after this season, depending on Purdy’s performance and the Chargers’ needs under Greg Roman’s new run-oriented offense. On the other hand, some fans might find humor in the idea of the Niners acquiring O’Connell, but the 49ers primary motivation would be acquiring additional draft picks. This trade would make sense only when O’Connell improves and Purdy’s performance declines. Overall, trading O’Connell to Las Vegas for Purdy would resemble a smaller-scale version of the Goff/Stafford trade from a few years ago, benefitting both teams with proven talent and valuable draft assets.
