‘POOR’ is the one word that can be used to describe the San Francisco 49ers performance this season. It might seem a bit harsh, but after strong performances in the past two years, expectations were high. The team though, did not live up to it, as they ended the season with just six wins. Quite a step down from last season, right? Well, this poor performance means Kyle Shanahan is compelled to do something this time that he never does. So, what exactly is that?

Well, the 49ers HC has never attended the NFL Combine, and that is about to change. According to OurSF49ers, Shanahan will be attending the event, and they shared the same on X. They shared, “49ers HC Kyle Shanahan, who typically skips the combine, is expected to join GM John Lynch next week during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.” Well, when one looks at the poor performance of the team and their need to get a top pick in the draft, it makes sense, doesn’t it?

Shanahan and Co will have 11 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, and they need to ensure they make the best use of them. They also hold the No. 11 overall pick in the draft, which will be very important for the team. However, the 49ers are not only focusing on draft picks. Recent reports indicate that they are in talks with QB Brock Purdy and are planning to offer him a contract extension.

Matt Barrows recently discussed this on the 49ers +/- podcast. He believes Purdy will earn around $57.5 million as part of his new deal. He explained, “The reason I’ve come up with that number is I think Jared Goff’s was 55.” He added, “And so you factor in inflation and the rise in the salary cap this year compared to when Goff signed his deal; that’s the number you wind up with. I just can’t see the agent settling for anything less than what some of these other guys got.”

It will be very interesting to see what sort of deal Purdy gets. It seems highly unlikely that Shanahan will let him go, and if they continue with him, a deal around the $57 million mark sounds reasonable.

Will Brock Purdy stay with the 49ers?

From being Mr. Irrelevant in 2022 to securing almost a $60 million deal this season, Purdy’s rise has been something. 2 years ago no one would have expected him to become the main man at the 49ers, but well, here we are. The 25-year-old has played well and has slowly and steadily increased his value, and now it looks like he will reap the benefits of it soon.

What’s your perspective on:

Will the 49ers regret banking on Brock Purdy, or is he their next big star?

Have an interesting take?

When we see how important Purdy has been for the team, it seems a given that he will stay with the 49ers for the coming season, right? Well, not everyone shares the same feeling. Recently, Greg Jennings talked about Prudy and whether the 49ers should re-sign him.

On First Things First with Nick Wright, the former Packers WR talked about it, saying, “Will they regret it? I think they will, simply because of what we’re talking about right now.” He continued, “With Brock Purdy, the challenge is going to be what we saw this year can be what we will see moving forward.”

Purdy this season was great—rushing for 323 years, while also leading the team with 5 rushing touchdowns. Despite all this, many believe Purdy’s impressive performance is more so because of the strong squad the 49ers have and less due to his own play. Well, that does seem harsh, doesn’t it?

The Packers have the team and the mentality to go deep into the season, and they have proven that in the past. It all now depends on what call Shanahan takes this season, who the 49ers pick in the draft, and who they choose to retain. Well, whatever happens, it’s certainly going to be interesting to watch what the 49ers do this offseason.
