What an emotional rollercoaster the 49ers game was! Imagine being Jake Moody in those moments – the weight of the team on your shoulders. Those missed field goals were real heartbreakers, especially in a game that close. You could just feel the tension when that first one went wide right before halftime – even Shanahan, who’s usually pretty stoic, was visibly affected.
That second miss in the 4th quarter when they were trailing… oof. Those are the moments that haunt kickers. Going from potentially having a comfortable lead at half to watching the Lions take control and ultimately win 40-34. Just shows how those seemingly small moments can totally change the momentum of a game.
During the post-game conference, the coach expected a question about it. When asked if Jake Moddy will have a secure future, he said, “We’re evaluating all positions. Early (in) the week, I was saying some of the things that he’s gone through this year. Just him coming back from that injury and everything and today wasn’t a great day by no means. Missing a 51 yard field goal, (and) the 58 yard field goal that’s you know just a got to have it situation. I’m not going to be too hard on him for um that far of a kick, but I know he’s capable of making that and it looked like he got the distance. (I) think he just missed it.” Kyle Shanahan was right. The fans are frustrated with loss.
Things wouldn’t have escalated if they won the game. But they lost by 6 points. They would have gotten those from those 2 FGs Jake Moody missed. Additionally, he also missed an extra point in the last touchdown which went right of the upright. It was disastrous.

The 49ers HC also touched upon that missed extra point and added, “Obviously that extra point I don’t know how the snap and the hold were. We’ll look at that one when we see the tape but got to make that extra point at this point.” But Jake Moody also missed an onside kick, so Kyle Shanahan also revealed about the kicker’s mindset while mentioning, “I don’t know about people’s mental.”
The fans are angry. They requested the team to release him and don’t want him to play. It’s wild.

After returning from the high ankle sprain, something is not right with the kicker, particularly in the 40+ yard kicks. Even against the Dolphins in the week 16 matchup, he missed the 41-yard FG. In 13 games this year, he has missed 9 of 18 FGs from 40+ yards. But today, they would have won the game if he converted his chances. Another angry fan mentioned it’s time to move on and tweeted, “The Niners need to release Jake Moody after this game. Not at the end of the season. He needs to go now. It’s in his head.”
