Some people age like fine wine, but the bottle may gather a little dust. Just ask veteran QB Kirk Cousins about it. Yes, he earned 4 Pro Bowl selections and a Bart Starr Award. Kirk ranks third on the Vikings’ all-time passing yards list. He obviously achieved several other honors before making it to the Falcons in 2024. Cousins already missed half of the 2023 campaign because of a torn right Achilles. And that bad luck reached him again when he recently went against the Saints in the Week 10 game and faced another injury. Now rookie Michael Penix Jr. has usurped him, so does that mean Kirk will enter the 2025 season injured and as a backup? We’ll have to dig in a little to find it.

It takes a lot of time for a 36-year-old guy to heal compared to a rookie who just got into the league. And that’s the main concern. Kirk was not able to perform because of hindrances in his mobility and accuracy. Scenarios like this often bring up questions regarding the future with the team. Kirk Cousins was asked on GMFB, “How do you see your future with football going, knowing that you have a no-trade clause in your contract with the Falcons?” To which Kirk humbly answered, “Time will tell. It’s still kind of uncertain. We’ll get to March and know a lot more. But, you know, I think the focus for me really is getting healthy. I’m no good to the Falcons. I’m no good to a team if I’m not feeling really good.

He further expressed more about his injuries, “Nobody’s perfect in this league. We’re never feeling 100 percent. So it didn’t really affect me too much, but then against the Saints [in Week 10], I got hit pretty good in my right shoulder and elbow. From there, kinda dealing with that, it was something I was working through.” But the Kirk Cousins we know can never back down. Now that the season’s over, you have the time and the energy to say, OK, let’s get the right ankle back, let’s get the shoulder back, let’s get the elbow back, and if we can do that, I feel like I got a new life ahead of me in pro football.

Is this new life with the Falcons, or will Cousins be looking for a fresh start elsewhere? It’s not too long since he signed his four-year, $180 million contract, but with the rise of Michael Penix Jr. as the potential star QB and his injury struggles, the situation has become complicated. He’s one of the best players and human beings as well, always giving respect to everyone around him. You can’t help but want the best for a guy like that.

Whatever comes next, Cousins’ journey in the league is far from over, and we can’t count him out just yet.

Is Patrick Mahomes’ dominance on another level? Kirk Cousins thinks so

What’s your perspective on:

Is Kirk Cousins' time as a starting QB over, or does he have a comeback left in him?

Have an interesting take?

The night of the big dance is a few days shy, when two teams will meet for a do-or-die showdown. The next day of Super Bowl LIX will be a day full of record-breaking headlines. I can bet you on that. Travis Kelce just gotta pocket 133 yards to break his own record for most receiving yards by a TE in a Super Bowl. Saquon Barkley will also put on a memorable show. By surpassing Terrell Davis’ record for most rushing yards in a single postseason. But you and I both know very well that all eyes will be on the Chiefs‘ QB Patrick Mahomes. Even rivals praise his greatness.

His performance was recently pointed out by Kirk Cousins. Even though he has seen a lot more football than Patrick. Kirk didn’t mince words while putting his respect on him. In the latest episode of GMFB, he said, “Ability to kind of know when do I run, when do I stay in the pocket, when do I move but remain a passer, when do I remain a passer and then say okay it’s time to go and take off on my legs. I just think that, that’s sixth sense. That ability, it’s hard to teach, and he just has always been able to do it well. And the more tape the defenses have on him. It just doesn’t really change the fact that he’s going to have that sense.

He further continued, “I mean even some of those plays he makes where he, you know, spin moves and no looks and I don’t know how to do that. I wish I did. Maybe he’d do a clinic someday and I could learn from him but yeah sometimes I’m watching with my boys and I look at them and I’m like yeah sorry guys, dad can’t do that.” The humble words of Kirk clearly says it out loud that Patrick is one of the OGs in the game right now.
