In a recent episode of SPEAK, aired on July 26, 2024, WR Keenan Allen joined the hosts, Joy Taylor, James Jones, and LeSean McCoy, to talk about his new home in Chicago. During the interview, Jones asked Allen about his thoughts on Caleb Williams while recalling his time with Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers. Jones noted that in the early days of Rodgers, he felt the talent and potential of A-Rod. Hence, he was curious to know from Allen whether there “Has it been any of those moments to where you like, ‘Man I’ve seen this before, man. This young fella is gonna be special.

To which, Allen responded by describing the quarterback’s impressive off-schedule throws, like passing across the body that hints at him being a special player. The WR expressed, “I don’t really compare him to Philip. I am really comparing him more to Herbert if anything because of it’s kind of deja vu.

He continued explaining, “When Herbert started it was the same thing, you know you get those, you get a young guy that’s a rookie, he’s just got to make his way, he’s got to go through these reps and see these looks and see him over and over and over again till he’s comfortable with it and that’s when he can turn into the Aaron Rogers and the Philip Rivers,” confidently reading defenses and making decisive plays. Herbert and Williams are arguably similar when it comes to their talent of throwing passes.

Additionally, he was a fresh face in the Chargers in 2020 when Allen taught Herbert and played a crucial role in developing him into a star quarterback. Hence, the Bears too, want the same from Allen for Williams. According to Allen, Williams is like Herbert only, who requires teachings from him, which will eventually turn him into a potential veteran player like Rivers or Rodgers.

Have an interesting take?

During his 11 seasons with the Chargers, WR has caught passes from Rivers and Herbert. So, now as he sees a similarity between them and Williams, Allen is pretty much sure that he is on the right team, and the rookie quarterback has the potential to do wonders in the league.

Meanwhile, an incident from their camp is going viral, with many social media users talking about Allen’s frustration about Williams.

A mistake by Caleb Wiliams that frustrated Keenan Allen?

During the Bears’ OTAs in June, Allen looked visibly frustrated. His irritation was on full display when he reacted sharply to an under thrown pass from Caleb Williams. In the video, Allen can be heard exclaiming, “Hell nah” after catching a pass from the QB. This clip, caught on camera, stirred up conversations about the growing pains of working with a new quarterback, who is still finding his rhythm in the team. However, that was just a disappointment for that pass.

Yet, it’s crucial to remember that this one moment doesn’t capture the full story of Allen and Williams’ relationship and their practice together. As Allen mentioned already, the rookie QB just needs some time to be comfortable with the play and the team, and soon he will be great. This is also evident from an incident in the recent training camp. During the camp, Williams has had solid moments in the 7-on-7 periods of the first practices. He connected well with Allen for impressive touchdowns and making a precise throw to running back D’Andre Swift.

Despite facing some rough patches, like a strip-sack and a few penalties, Williams is learning and growing in the camp. And as Allen stated is going to be great.
