A joyous afternoon has turned into a nightmare for Kansas City. February 11 marked a historical victory for the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. A couple of days after the win, to continue the traditional championship parade, the Chiefs had their celebration parade in Kansas City, Missouri.

The previous day, Mayor Quinton Lucas assured the city was well prepared for their champions and that the event would have the required security. However, the celebrations turned devastating because of the firing and multiple injuries.

The Chiefs started their victory parade on Wednesday, February 14, at 11 a.m. ET from 6th Street and Grand Boulevard and concluded at Union Station. An estimated one million people celebrated the victory in downtown Kansas City. However, at the west side of Union Station near the parking garage, the celebration took a catastrophic turn when a mass shooting reportedly happened. Thousands of revelers fled in fear to save their lives. According to the reports, 21 were injured, including nine children, and one succumbed to shooting.

Per a KMBC report, “The Kansas City Fire Department said eight victims had ‘immediate life-threatening injuries,’ seven had life-threatening injuries, and six had non-life threatening.” The victims were transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital, Truman Medical Center, and St. Luke’s Hospital. Children’s Mercy Hospital is treating 11 victims, including nine gunshot victims. Per a new update, “Stephanie Meyer, Senior VP of Nursing at Children’s Mercy said all patients are expected to have a full recovery.”

Meanwhile, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves has informed that three people have been detained in the shooting case, and continuous life-saving measures are being given to the victims.

Shortly after the news, the Chiefs franchise released a statement saying that they are “truly saddened by the senseless act of violence… Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.” The franchise’s X official account also informed that all “players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.”

Brittany Mahomes took to her Instagram story to share her dismay. She wrote, “Shooting people is never the answer. Praying for Kansas City & America in general, this is rough. Highly embarrassed and disappointed in this, Super Bowl wins will never be the same because of this, it’s devastating. Lives lost and people injured during something that was suppose to be a celebration. Horrible and traumatizing. So many prayers going to the families involved.”

Besides Brittany, her husband and Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, wrote: “Praying for Kansas City…” with three prayer emoticons on X. NFL analyst Rich Eisen felt relieved after hearing about the patients’ recoveries. He appreciated it by saying, “Thank goodness. And thank you to all the outstanding law enforcement, first responders and medical professionals who could make this happen!” Besides them, Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill also reacted to the incident, requesting everyone to join him in praying for the KC victims.
