On September 17, the day Patrick Mahomes celebrated his birthday and the day when his long-awaited dream gift of a new contract was finalized, media captured him in his iconic pose. This went viral. But it’s not just a casual pose, it has deeper meaning to it.

Mahomes has forever been a star of the league who is looked upon by his fans. Among his various activities and poses, one is recently being highlighted, and i.e. his kneeling. The 2x MVP has his reasons when he kneel down on the field. So, what are the reasons?

Why did Patrick Mahomes kneel?

During the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, September 17th, at Everbank Stadium, Patrick Mahomes  did his iconic kneeling pose. Interestingly, photographers captured this gesture, and it quickly circulated all over the internet. So, what’s the reason behind number 15’s kneeling? However, the exact reason is yet unknown, there are multiple reports that suggest, he usually kneels down to pray. This moment which unfolded in the second half of the game, also holds the “praying” reason.

Thus, he choose to kneel in his distinctive style to pray before or during the game. Interestingly, many also likened this pose of Mahomes similar to what players in the past have been doing to stand up for the blacks. Although this “protest” wasn’t the reason behind Mahomes’ kneeling, that doesn’t he mean he has never stood for them.

Once Mahomes’ dad, opened up that he doesn’t need to kneel to ‘stand up‘ for the black community. In the past, Mahomes has expressed his support for the rights of the black community via a video.

Patrick Mahomes stood for Black Lives?

In June 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Patrick Mahomes lent his voice to a video message aimed at the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Mahomes openly shared the rationale behind his decisions during the offseason and addressed those who may have disagreed with him. The 2x Super Bowl champion told reporters that his primary focus was on effecting change, even if it stirred controversy. He stated, “I’m going do whatever I believe and what I believe is right and I’m going to do whatever I can to fight for equality for all people.

The Young Goat further elaborated, emphasizing, “I’m not worried about people and how they’re going to do negative stuff back to me. I’m worried about doing what’s right for humanity and making sure that all people feel equal. And I feel like that’s been the biggest thing, it’s not necessarily the gesture, but we’re trying to fix something, we’re trying to make it where it’s equal, everybody feels safe….” Mahomes also touched upon the possibility of players once again kneeling during the national anthem in 2020. While he didn’t confirm whether he and his teammates would choose this form of protest, he underscored those who did not intend to show disrespect to the flag or to anyone who has served the country.

As of the present, he hasn’t taken a knee to protest against police brutality but has consistently stood in support of the Black community.
