Did Justin Herbert's brothers pave the way for his NFL success, or is it all his own talent?

For some, breaking a record is a lifetime’s worth of achievement. And for some, it is just another day of the week. The latter description fits the LA Chargers’ Quarterback, Justin Herbert. Ever since he was drafted 6th overall in the 2020 NFL draft, Justin has proved his worth down to the last penny. The Rose Bowl MVP finished as one of the top 60 players in the NFL in his rookie season, justifying his 262.5 million dollar contract extension in 2023.

No. 10, Justin, has been a great NFL prospect ever since his days as the QB at the Oregon Ducks. His coach Jim Harbaugh said, “ What I want to ask him is, how does he learn this?” I think I have an answer to Jim’s question. The credit for his innate talent to learn those skills goes to the genetic code of his family. From his father to his mother, quite a few of his family members have played in the sports arena. And they have passed this prowess to the Herbert brothers.

Justin isn’t the only Herbert to have sweated on the gridiron. In fact, he is just one of the three. His elder brother, Mitchell Herbert, and younger brother, Patrick Herbert, are also football players. The QB’s elder brother played as a wide receiver at the University of Montana. Being the eldest in the family, solely focusing on football wasn’t possible for Patrick. He not only excelled at the game but also had a 4.0 GPA, becoming a national honor society member. He went undrafted in NFL. The 28-year-old has been a perpetual source of inspiration for the QB.

The NFL Offensive Rookie Player of the Year happens to be the middle child of the family, having a younger brother named Patrick Herbert. Patrick followed in his brother’s footsteps and played for the Oregon Ducks at the collegiate level. The 6 foot 5 plays at the Tight End position for the Ducks and has established himself as a starter in the team. It’s undeniable that the Herbert family has a diverse set of players.

The QB’s brothers have been with him at every step of the way. The brothers have helped each other grow and, as Justin wrote in an IG post, “ Thank you for not only being my receivers but for being my best friends. I wouldn’t be here without you.” With powerful receivers on and off the field, the Pro Bowl player shouldn’t have a problem proving why he has one of the biggest contracts in NFL history.

Top 3 biggest contracts in NFL History

What’s your perspective on:

Did Justin Herbert's brothers pave the way for his NFL success, or is it all his own talent?

Have an interesting take?

Even with a 262.5 million dollar contract, the 26-year-old is the third on this list. But at the time he signed this contract, he had the biggest average annual salary in the NFL. This contract was signed in 2023 and will continue for 5 years till 2029. And as Peter Parker said, ” With great powers, come great responsibilities.” With such a big rookie contract, Herbert needs to bring up some special performers and lead the Chargers to the Lombardi trophy. But let’s now talk about No.2 on this list, the guy who exceeded Justin’s average annual salary. Currently he is behind Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars (5 years, $275M).

The second on this list is none other than the Cincinnati Bengals’s star Quarterback Joe Burrow. The QB signed a five-year contract with the Bengals valued at 275 million dollars. He has an average annual salary of a whopping 55 million dollars, the biggest in NFL history. And finally, the no.1 shouldn’t come across as a surprise. This man is arguably the greatest QB in NFL history, it is Patrick Mahomes. The former MVP signed a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs for 450 million dollars in 2021. If any contract is justified, then it’s Mahomes considering he has led the Chiefs to 3 titles in 5 years. But it must be noted that no.2 and no.3 are still earning a higher average salary than Mahomes.

Anyway, all have secured an amount of money that can last a lifetime. Burrow and Mahomes have proved their worth and are one of the best in the league right now. The chip is on Justin’s shoulders to enter the list of the greats with such high expectations. But with his brothers by his side, he can do anything.
