The Chargers’ standout QB, who lit up the league, didn’t just become an overnight sensation. His mother, Holly (Lusk) Herbert, a former collegiate athlete who forged her own career on the basketball court, is a substantial role model in his success story.

Holly had potential that showed promise early on in her bright career. Having excelled in basketball at the University of Oregon (reaching the Final Four in 1995), she then transferred her love of sports into coaching and teaching. After graduation, Holly went on to inspire young athletes—and her greatest student is at home.

Mark Herbert, a track & field athlete and football player, potentially guided his son through his gridiron journey. Mark joined Montana’s football team, although it’s unclear if he ever played—but that was a huge part of his life. Both Holly and Mark are proud parents of their three sons: Mitchell (the defensively gifted 49ers safety); Patrick (the tight-end for the Dolphins), and Justin (the Chargers’ starting QB).

Following in Justin’s footsteps: Introducing the Herbert brothers

While Justin Herbert’s NFL career shines beautifully, his siblings are following their own paths. Mitchell Herbert, Justin’s older brother, was a three-star high school athlete. He followed their father’s footsteps and attended the University of Montana, unlike Justin.

On the other hand, Justin’s younger brother, Patrick Herbert, continues the family history at the University of Oregon, where Justin learned his trade. Patrick, a Ducks junior tight end, has familial athleticism—and may follow his older brothers to the NFL. Who knows, they might become the next Kelce brothers with a dominant NFL sibling combo!

Born March 10, 1998, the Chargers’ star QB’s NFL career began at the University of Oregon on the football field. He secured the 2020 Rose Bowl MVP and led Oregon to the 2019 Pac-12 Championship. Soon after, the LA Chargers selected him sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft—and his impact was immediate. The league recognized Herbert’s incredible performance and named him AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
