Most around the NFL know that the LA Chargers might not lose patience with Brandon Staley. After Justin Herbert got injured, the Chargers’ chances of making it to the playoffs took a hit and there are rumors that Staley might not be the face of the Chargers’ coaching staff in the future. Despite a solid roster, the head coach wasn’t able to make the best out of it. The Chargers lost to the Broncos yesterday and didn’t just come out with a tainted record, but also with an injured Justin Herbert.

The extent of his injury was best summarized by Adam Schefter on X, and the update doesn’t look too promising for the QB and Staley.

Per Adam Schefter, Justin Herbert is set to undergo surgery on his fractured right index finger on Tuesday. The Chargers QB’s chance to return this season will be clarified once he undergoes the surgery. A fracture isn’t something that heals in a day or two, so we can expect Herbert to take a seat for the remainder of the season, and if he does come back, the Chargers’ chances of making it to the playoffs are still quite slim.

His injury came in the second quarter of the game against the Denver Broncos when the QB took a hit from the Broncos’ defensive end, Zach Allen. With Herbert out, Easton Stick has taken the driver’s seat and is most likely to start the next game against the Las Vegas Raiders.  Before the injury, Herbert started 62 consecutive games with the Chargers, second-best in the league next to Josh Allen. Per Coach Staley, Herbert’s future with the league is important, and he is giving him all the time he needs to recover. After all, it might be Staley’s last season with the Chargers.

Despite having a fairly equipped roster under his management, Staley failed to elevate the Chargers to the playoffs with a deficit of wins. With Herbert’s return now seeming blurry, the team is undoubtedly going to have a tougher time. The rumor is that Staley might be replaced soon with the likes of Kellen Moore, Ben Johnson, or Bobby Slowik might replace him.
