Can Justin Herbert's return from injury be the game-changer the Chargers need against the Chiefs?

With the Los Angeles Chargers prepping for the next matchup against the Chiefs, they have received some exciting news about star QB Justin Herbert. After his ankle injury dominated headlines, an MRI conducted on Monday revealed some promising updates. With reports indicating Herbert is “progressing,” everyone is anticipating what this could mean for the Chargers’ offense moving forward.

It was during the Week 2 matchup against the Panthers that Herbert suffered a high ankle strain. This injury got him sidelined in the 3rd quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers. At first, there were doubts that the injury might be more serious. But thankfully, Jim Harbaugh has alleviated some of those worries. “He could do some things in practice today.”

In the first two games before his injury, Herbert showcased his elite skills by completing 67.4% of his passes for 274 yards, three touchdowns, and just one interception, ranking 14th in QBR. His ability to command the offense will be crucial as the Chargers look to maintain momentum in the competitive AFC West. If he returns against the next opponent, defensive schemes will have to adjust to combat his strong arm and quick decision-making.

Should Herbert manage to take the field this coming week, his presence could significantly bolster the Chargers‘ chances. With talented receiving corps like Keenan Allen and Mike Williams waiting to exploit mismatches, defenses need to remain on high alert. Herbert’s playmaking ability can rejuvenate an offense already loaded with talent.

The Backup Plan Unfolding

What’s your perspective on:

Can Justin Herbert's return from injury be the game-changer the Chargers need against the Chiefs?

Have an interesting take?

Despite his anticipated return, the Chargers have been preparing their backup plan if Herbert can’t play right away. Backup quarterback Easton Stick, who has been with the Chargers since 2019, could soon find himself taking up the responsibility. Given his ability to scramble and extend plays, Stick provides a suitable alternative if Herbert’s recovery takes longer.

During the offseason, the Chargers acquired Taylor Heinicke from the Atlanta Falcons, adding to the quarterback room. However, Stick’s familiarity with the system could give him the edge. Harbaugh previously stated that if Herbert couldn’t play, “Right now it’s Easton,” indicating confidence in his abilities despite a prior lack of starting opportunities. This versatility gives the Chargers a solid contingency plan while waiting for their starter to return.

Fans might remember Stick’s two-game stint last season, where he showed flashes of promise despite not securing any wins. In those games, he managed a commendable performance with a QBR above 50.0 in two of the five starts—enough to leave fans encouraged about his potential. If called upon, he can transition effectively as the team leans heavily on their running game, currently led by J.K. Dobbins, who ranks first in the NFL’s rushing yards this season.

With Justin Herbert making progress in his recovery, the potential for him to return and elevate the team’s play exists, ensuring the Chargers remain a formidable opponent in the NFL landscape. Whether Herbert returns or Stick takes over in the interim, y’all gotta be on the lookout.
