Fields signed a 4-year rookie contract with the Bears amounting to $18.8 million. And with the contract extension negotiations taking longer than usual. Expectations of trade were flying about, but GM Foles still had a trick up his sleeve.

“If we were to do something with Justin, I want to do right by him”, said the GM to the media. Suggesting the possibility of an extension with the QB. Even though, the Bears and the QB have been unable to sign on the dotted line till now.

GM Poles also emphasized the factor of being ready and willing to make the deal. “Just like I talk about contracts, it takes two teams to figure this out”, said GM. However, as the clock keeps ticking, the time is not in the favor of the Bears if they want to retain the services of Fields.

The Bears have to lock down early

With the last year on Fields’ rookie contract kickstarting soon, the Bears need to have Fields under a longer duration. Otherwise, they might even fumble the chance for a blockbuster trade as well. And GM Poles understands the scenario at hand.

“Living in that grace base, you’d want to do something sooner rather than later”, said the 38-year-old GM. It helps that Fields has expressed on numerous occasions that he wants to be a part of the Bears’ roster going forward. And the increase of the salary cap by $30 million this season, will help both parties.
