The NFL Free Agency has started and the teams are playing their cards differently this time to mark their names in history as the Super Bowl winners. Big plays are coming, for sure! The Steelers who were struggling with their QB situation – who to keep and who to let go – have finally decided on letting go. We saw that coming, didn’t we?
But there is someone who predicted what the Steelers would choose to do. As Vinnie Pasquantino, MLB player, casually posted on his X account hours before the deal was locked, “Justin Fields to the Jets, Sources: me. 2 years 35 million. Ok going to the cages to start my day.” Fast forward, and boom – Rapoport of the NFL Network confirmed Fields’ agreement with the Jets for two years of $40 million. Looks like Pasquantino has his little birdies in the NFL – maybe.
Justin Fields, who the Bears traded to the Steelers for a sixth-round conditional pick, has packed his bags to move ahead with the New York Jets. The Jets played their best cards on the first day of free agency 2025 by offering Fields $40 million, out of which $30 million is guaranteed. Smart move? Definitely. Desperate move? Maybe.

However, the Steelers aren’t having a good day. They are in a tight spot right now about their QB position – trying to figure out who it could be. Brooke Pryor, ESPN Steelers Reporter, called it the “million dollar question.” She says, “The Steelers find themselves in a bit of a predicament. Now that Justin Fields is gone to the New York Jets… Justin Fields had an idea of what his market was gonna be. If you are asking for an open relationship, your relationship is probably over.”
And guess the Steelers are now in conversation with? Well, it’s none other than Aaron Rodgers. Yep, the same guy the Jets waved goodbye to. Plus, they are also keeping Russell Wilson as their backup option. Looks like the Steelers are looking for a QB who is a veteran leader with plenty of experience.
But, Fields chose this contract because, well, the Pittsburgh Steelers weren’t rolling out the red carpet for him – no long-term guarantees beyond one year. This the Jets took to their advantage, turning the odds in their favour. This move is significant for the Jets as they were looking for an Aaron Rodgers rebound – after saying their goodbyes. Plus, the Jets contract will give Fields – yes, money but also the spotlight he deserves. Finally, he will be stepping out of the backup shadows of Russell Wilson. A win-win situation for both parties.
Well, the Jets fans disagree and are finding this whole situation quite hilarious. A post was shared by @br_betting on X, “The odds for the Jets winning the Super Bowl in the 2025 season before signing Fields were +15000. Now that they have signed Fields, the Jets’ odds for the same are still at +15000.” And then the fans started to put their reactions as one wrote, “They should be even worse than the odds they have.” Another wrote, “Fields will do nothing but take a step backwards.” The Jets won Super Bowl III in 1969 and now the fans believe that winning again seems difficult.
Now this swapping of QBs has raised other questions as well. Who will be the starting quarterback of the Steelers? Will Russell stay or take a deal like Fields did?

What’s your perspective on:
Are the Jets setting themselves up for success with Fields, or is it a desperate gamble?

After Fields, Russell Wilson is also hitting free agency
As the quarterbacks are on the move – Russell Wilson will also hit free agency. He played one season with the Steelers and was placed as the starting QB for the Steelers, but a calf injury didn’t let him perform when the season started. This led to Fields taking his place. And, he put up a good fight, racking up 16 touchdowns and 2,482 yards. It was because of him that the Steelers reached the Wild Card playoffs last season, but eventually lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, as he says goodbye to the Steelers and hits free agency, Matt Johnson at Sportsnaut predicts – Russell will sign up with the New York Giants. The Giants have been in talks with several other QBs from Shedeur Sanders to Cam Ward, and now Russell has joined that “maybe” list. It’s no secret that the Giants have been struggling in the NFC franchise – with a 3-14 game score in 2024. They faced their fair share of struggles as their backup quarterback Tommy DeVito started two games but failed to throw any touchdowns, highlighting the team’s instability at this crucial position. The team endured a franchise-record 10-game losing streak.

But hey, look at the brighter side, due to this, the Giants have a golden opportunity to fix their QB mess because they have a No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft 2025. And according to Aaron Schatz of NFL.com Russell would be their best shot, “Wilson, who had 2,482 passing yards in 11 starts, can play at a reasonable level and would provide a higher floor that the Giants can build upon with improvements at other positions.”
On one side, Russell Wilson is packing his bags again and heading to the struggling NFC team – who definitely need stability for their next season. On the other, this feels like a fresh start for Fields and a shot for him to prove that he is more than just a backup. And for the Steelers? Well, let’s see who they end up with.
