While the Pittsburgh Steelers were scratching their heads over deciding between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, the latter backed his bags and went to the New York Jets. He signed a two-year, $40 million deal with them, and perhaps this was a smart move. You see, the young QB will be reunited with his former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson and if things go as expected, Fields will improve his passing and become a long-term solution for the team. All this would come at a fraction of Aaron Rodgers’ cost!

If Fields shows his true potential, he could change the franchise and lead them to the playoffs. The New York Jets front office needs to make sure that they give him good weapons in the name of tight ends and wide receivers that can help set the offensive line for success. If they do this in the next few months, the team will look and feel quite different. But how does Fields feel about signing with the new team?

Well, in a new interview with the New York Jets, the 26-year-old QB shared his thoughts about what inspired him to take such a step. It seems head coach Aaron Glenn had a big role in this. Hear it from Fields himself:

I think number one, Coach [Aaron] Glenn. I played against him early in my career, I know how passionate he is about the game, the way he coaches, the way his players play, so I think that was the biggest thing for me. Just the opportunity,” he told during an interview after joining the New York Jets. Oof! Did Fields just sneak in a shot at Mike Tomlin?

Kinda feels like it because let’s be real—Tomin has been the HC of the Steelers for 18 years and is one of the most respected figures in the league. Still, Fields chose a rookie HC over him to play in 2025. That’s not a good thing for the Steelers’ reputation. But his decision isn’t without merit. I mean, the Steelers brought him in on a one-year deal, and his time in Pittsburgh wasn’t exactly one for the history books, aside from those first six games. Think about it this way: He started off as Wilson’s backup, got his shot when Wilson went down, and then boom—Tomlin handed him the starting gig.

Fast forward to a thrilling 4-2 record in the first six games, Mike Tomlin and Co. decided to bench Fields just because Russell Wilson was fit to start. To make things even worse, the Steelers didn’t give him an opportunity to start when Wilson struggled in the final leg of the regular season. So yeah, it’s safe to say why Fields chose the Jets over the Steelers.

And if you’re thinking that he hit break right there—well, think again. Because the guy didn’t even feel shy about expressing his admiration towards the Jets’ fans. “The fans, of course, the city. When you win here, there’s no better place to win. All those reasons, all those characteristics, are ultimately the reason I ended up here,” Fields stated. The Steelers’ fans must be side-eyeing him right about now.

The thing is: Ever since the Steelers were knocked out of the playoffs, the Steelers Nation was expecting that Fields would be the starting QB. But nope, neither did the team sign him on a lucrative deal, nor did the QB decide to stay put in Pittsburgh. The reason’s pretty simple: Fields wanted a better shot, and perhaps the Steelers weren’t giving him that. But what’s ahead for him?

Justin Fields is gearing up for the 2025 campaign!

Justin Fields had gone through a lot of changes in the past year. For starters, the guy was competing against Russell Wilson for the QB1 role in 2024. If not for Wilson’s calf injury, Mike Tomlin would have made up his mind that Wilson was their guy. Fast forward to now, and after securing $40 million (with $30 million guaranteed) for two years with the Jets, Fields is now ready to lead his team’s O-line in 2025.

To make things even more interesting, the QB is already hitting the practice sessions. Go on, you can give it a second read. On Thursday, Fields hit up his official Instagram handle and shared a glimpse of his training session in Atlanta. And there he is—QB1, out there, slinging darts in practice during Session 1.

The Jets have been one of the worst teams in the NFL in the last decade. The reason? Oh, there are plenty of reasons for that. For starters, the team has experienced a revolving door of head coaches and general managers for years. Second, their drafting decisions aren’t making noise.

And let’s not forget about their QB curse. Most notable example? Aaron Rodgers. So yeah, if Justin Fields is really looking to bring a change in the team, he had better lace up and hit the ground running. And guess what? He already did. After all, the guy’s surely looking for that same start in the 2025 season.
