Russell Wilson snubbed for Justin Fields—Is this a sign of Wilson's decline or Fields' rise?

Pittsburgh Steelers lost their 2nd preseason game against Buffalo Bills by 3-9 on 17th of August. The loss is being attributed to the key position, the quarterback. Bitzburgh QB, Russell Wilson, completed 8-of-10 passes for 47 yards, but the team didn’t score a single point in his five possessions. The 35-year-old is already struggling in the end phase of his career. And this performance certainly didn’t show excellent control of the game. Should they go to the alternative (Justin Fields) to get results? According to analysts, that will be a better move.

While speaking on ESPN’s Get Up show on August 19, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky claimed that they should go with Fields and said, “Number 1, Justin Fields should start for the Pittsburgh Steelers. 2 preseason games in and 2 weeks to the season. I think it’s obvious that Justin brings more good than bad in comparison to Russ (Russell Wilson).” What the ex-NFL star was referring to are the two third-down sacks Wilson took in the game against the Bills. Fields too had many sacks, but his passes were more on point. He completed 11-of-17 passes for 92 yards and also had 42 rushing yards. The team’s only score came from a 43-yard field goal by Chris Boswell. Fields set that up by completing 20 yards followed by 5 yard drive. The head coach, Mike Tomlin, has a different thinking.

The game showed Steeler Nation that their offense isn’t ready for the coming season. Tomlin also blamed the offense for the loss. He described them as lacking consistency and remarked that he couldn’t witness their functioning. While he may be devising plans, the fans and locker room remain unconvinced by the underwhelming outcomes.

Orlovsky also criticized the coach, asking him to get serious if they wanted to win the Super Bowl. While talking about the loopholes in offense, he said, ” The sacks I would disagree they’re all on Russ. You know, coach Tomlin says that’s not how we operate. I think that’s the biggest issue right now. The Russ that we saw isn’t operating this offense. They are certainly not contenders with the Russ that we saw this past weekend. It’s a lack of consistency.” While Mr. Unlimited is the favorite to start the games, you know everything can change if the team doesn’t win games. Russ is returning from a calf injury. Tomlin would like his QB finding form soon.

In the first two preseason losses, the Steelers’ offense failed to score any touchdowns. Against the Bills, Russell Wilson made a wonderful combination with the receiver Van Jefferson, but that didn’t last long. The offense lacked pass protection, with the rival defense stopping OT Broderick Jones and OG James Daniels in their tracks on multiple occasions. Their RB Jaylen Warren got injured during the game. Not good news! Everyone is looking towards to the OC Arthur Smith.

Steelers brought Smith to the franchise in hopes of a revival. However, that’s not what it looks like. Boswell, the only scorer against Bills, missed a similar opportunity. Smith unveiled on The Pat McAfee Show that Tomlin grants him sufficient room to execute his own strategies. However, results are important. When the Blitzburgh didn’t get them last year, they fired Matt Canada. Can Smith keep his place at the team permanent? We’ll find out soon.

Steelers play their first game against Atlanta Falcons on September 8. Last year, they got eliminated in the divisional playoffs against Bills. 15 years have passed since they last won the Lombardi Trophy. They will have to work really hard if they want to end the drought.
