The New York Jets are preparing for a worthy comeback, one that has the entire league watching them. Their preparations started as soon as the regular season ended. While they took care of the coaching staff during the offseason, on Thursday, they face another huge test. The Jets, with Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, will head to Green Bay after securing talent over two days that could lead to the comeback they are hoping for. But what is the team’s most necessary need this time?
Woody Johnson‘s team has a total of eight picks this year. Three in the early rounds and five in the later rounds of the draft. In the first round, they have the No. 7 overall pick. Now, the team’s most pressing need seems to be a TE. The team surrounding their newly signed QB, Justin Fields, is not sufficient. They need a WR, of course, after Davante Adams left, and the team needs a TE. But reports allege that the Jets’ office is divided on the issue. On one hand, the team wants to draft a TE with their first overall pick, and on the other, Coach Aaron Glenn believes they should use the first pick on a defensive player.
“I’m told Tyler Warren remains in the conversation for the New York Jets with the seventh pick, as many in the front office favor the tight end from Penn State. These same sources also say that head coach Aaron Glenn is dissenting and prefers the first pick to be a defensive… pic.twitter.com/WqUZhHRszf

Last month, Jets TE Tyler Conklin left in free agency, leaving a major void in that position. Lou Scataglia of NFL Spinzone writes, “With virtually no production at all at tight end right now, the New York Jets are absolutely in play to take Tyler Warren or Colston Loveland with this pick in the first round.” The Jets have four TEs left on the roster after Conklin’s departure. Neal Johnson, Zack Kuntz, Jeremy Ruckert and, Stone Smartt. But the problem with the four of them is that they have together recorded 66 catches and 644 yards in their careers. And Tyler alone in the 2024 season recorded 51 catches, while racking up 449 yards and 4 TDs.
That’s why few people in the Jets building want to use their first pick on drafting Tyler Warren. The Penn State alum is a top TE prospect in this year’s draft. But Aaron Glenn is not on the same page. A former ESPN analyst suggests that despite desperate needs for a TE, the team will most likely select a defensive player.
Aaron Glenn eyes defense, despite offensive needs
“If you’re a Jets fan, what I’m telling you is, Warren is in play, but it’s much more likely at this point, based on my information, that it’s going to be a defensive player.” That’s what NFL draft analyst Todd McShay said during a recent episode of the McShay Show. The former ESPN reporter admits that a few in the Jets brass are high on Tyler Warren, but despite that, Warren won’t be picked. Then, who will be the Jets’ number 1 pick?
Well, Todd says there are a couple of names in the mix. One among them is Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham. “I have not had the conversation about Mason Graham, but Mason Graham was not maybe expected to be there, okay? So don’t rule him out.” Meaning, Graham is not expected to be available at No. 7, but if he is, the Jets might pick him. As Aaron Glenn wants to draft a defensive player, Georgia Bulldogs DE Mykel DeAnthony Williams is also an interesting prospect. McShay names Mykel’s teammate from the Bulldogs, edge rusher Jalon Walker, also as an option for Glenn’s defense.

Todd rules out Texas A&M DE Shemar Stewart and Marshall’s rusher Mike Green from the Jets’ list. “I don’t think it’s going to be Shemar Stewart, okay? For other organizations, yes. I don’t think with this one. Could you see a Mike Green? No, not at this point,” said McShay. The analyst believes that the Jets brass is having some philosophical disagreement on how to approach the draft.
