Can you believe the Jets signed Justin Fields? Say what you want, but the 26-year-old will officially replace Aaron Rodgers in 2025. The new league year kicked in and the team did not wait a single day to tie the QB in a massive two-year contract worth $40 million. Justin Fields getting this contract clearly shows that the Jets are all in to put him to the test in the coming season. The QB is still looking for his big break, and who knows, maybe third time is the charm.
But will the Jets give Justin Fields an extension after this contract? Well, this was one of the most pressing questions right after the QB signed the contract. Fans want to know what the Jets are up to. And if Fields is just a stopgap measure for them until they find a good QB or not? Looks like one of the reporters has cleared a lot of things for us. He explained how Fields can be someone who would help the team on and off the field for the next two years. And while the 26-year-old is doing all this, the Jets would be looking to sign someone who can sort their long-term QB problem.

Yes, that’s right. On March 11th, while he was on the Unsportsmanlike Radio, ESPN’s Evan Cohen mentioned that Justin Fields is not someone to rely on: “I don’t think he’s a Jets QB long term, I think he’s a Jets QB for now.” But he played well for the Steelers? Well, Yeah, he did. But what of his run with the Bears? The Chicago, too, saw potential in him, but never considered him long-term. Fields has been pretty inconsistent on the gridiron. And that coming from a quarterback who also has injury issues is not a good sign.

Evan Cohen highlighted these points claiming, “I think what he is probably for the Jets is multipurpose.” Actually, in short, he was trying to signify how Justin Fields’ signing is linked to Aaron Glenn. The HC has just taken over the team. And it’s clear that, while he looks for the one thing that would make the squad different from others, he would also look to improve the team overall. And Justin Fields is an excellent choice for serving the purpose. He has the ability to make some great throws and run some good old yards for important gains during games.
On top of that, there is even hope that the QB’s performances in the next two years will earn him a long-term contract. As in the NFL, we’ve seen this happen numerous times. Remember QB Kurt Warner? Yeah, the same player who signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals in 2005, and then received a three-year extension. Results of the extension? He also led the squad to a Super Bowl appearance in 2008. Now that’s what you call making the most of the opportunity. Maybe Fields can also grab a similar opportunity once he shows what he’s really made of!
Chris Canty believes Justin Fields can be the missing piece for Aaron Glenn’s major plans
With his 106 completed passes for 1,106 yards and 5 touchdowns, Justin Fields last year was a menace on the field. The QB improved significantly and his plays were indeed proving the numbers true. Last season, he led the Steelers in six games and walked out of four of them standing tall. This is what the QB will do for you. Performance? Yes. Passes? Yes. Rushing? Yes. Leader? Yes. The man is a complete package without a setback like controversies or inappropriate background. Even Chris Canty thinks his clean slate may be his most significant advantage.

The icon was also on Unsportsmanlike Radio on March 11th, when he discussed what the Jets may be doing here. Canty explained that “Aaron Glenn is clearly prioritizing culture” for now. The club can definitely improve, but they want to avoid any negative publicity caused by their probable short-term quarterback. This allows them to drastically boost the team’s image over time.

A quarterback is routinely chastised for his statements, and the coaching staff is always feeding the flames, as has been seen around the NFL. Canty believes Glenn would regard Fields as someone who does not require the coaching staff to deal with this issue. The team has suffered from this in the past too when Aaron Rodgers made controversial comments about getting vaccinated. The veteran QB claimed, “But if I could do it again, I would have said [in August], f— the appeal. I’m just going to tell them I’m allergic to PEG, I’m not getting Johnson & Johnson, I’m not going to be vaxxed.”
Fields on the other hand is pretty chill off the field, and when the coaching staff is not preoccupied with convincing everyone that their culture is wonderful, they can actually create a great team culture. The Jets are likely to have a successful season next year, and Fields at their camp might provide us with some memorable moments. Hopes are that the team will definitely utilize him as their starting QB.
