There’s an old saying—two quarterbacks in one room? They’ll suck out all the oxygen. And Justin Fields? He’s done gasping for air. Last season, he walked into Pittsburgh and got thrown into a QB battle with Russell Wilson. Mike Tomlin made the call—Russ was QB1. So, Fields? He packed his bags and landed in New York. No more battles. Just a fresh start.
Quincy Avery, the renowned quarterback coach who helped shape Justin Fields’ early career, has a clear vision for what makes an elite QB in today’s game. When asked in 2024 about the “quintessential A+ quarterback,” Avery didn’t start with arm strength or speed—he started with mindset.
But Fields isn’t just coasting into his new gig. His longtime QB coach, Quincy Avery, just dropped a clip of him slinging passes with the caption Session 1. Two words. That’s all it took to send a message to the league—Justin’s already grinding, already locked in. And guess where this session happened? Atlanta. A little home cooking before he takes a bite out of the Big Apple.

Avery knows Fields better than most—he’s been shaping his game since high school. And if you ask him what makes a quarterback truly great, he doesn’t start with arm strength or athleticism. “The No. 1 feature that I want in a quarterback is confidence. Because that’s probably the biggest determining factor in how successful somebody is.” Fields has had that in spades since his Ohio State days. Now, it’s about proving it on the NFL stage.
This move to New York? Avery’s all in. He’s called it a “great situation” for Fields, and he’s not wrong. The Jets are building a system that fits his skill set—Aaron Glenn as coach, Tanner Engstrand calling the plays. No more trying to fit into a scheme that doesn’t highlight his strengths. No more being an afterthought. Just a chance to prove 31 teams wrong.
But the reason why this seems like a stretch because Fields has been through the wringer—elite in high school, a force at Ohio State, and then… well, let’s just say the NFL hasn’t exactly rolled out the red carpet.

You see, back in college, he torched defenses for 5,373 yards, 63 touchdowns, and just 9 picks in two seasons. The Buckeyes went 20-2 with him at the helm. Fast forward to the pros? The numbers hit different—7,780 yards, 45 TDs, 31 INTs in four seasons. Yikes! That’s not exactly franchise-QB material.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Justin Fields the Jets' answer to proving 31 teams wrong, or just another hopeful?
Have an interesting take?
But stats don’t tell the whole story. Fields has been scrambling—sometimes by design, sometimes for survival. And yet, he never folds.
Ryan Day, his old coach at Ohio State, once said, “One thing about Justin is he doesn’t get rattled. He is very composed. He doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low. But he’s driven, and his fire runs really hot inside.” That fire? Still burning. The league may have doubts, but Fields doesn’t. And neither does Quincy Avery, the QB whisperer who’s been with him since day one.
So, what’s next? More work. More reps. Put it like this: Session 1 was just the start. But now, if Fields has anything to say about it, the real sessions will be happening on Sundays—with the whole league watching.
Justin Fields already feels like an integral part of the Gang Green
Justin Fields could’ve gone anywhere. But New York? That wasn’t just a business decision—it was personal. After bouncing from Chicago to Pittsburgh, Fields landed with the Jets, his third team in four years. Sounds like another “prove-it” deal, right? Not exactly. The reason he signed? Aaron Glenn. Not a flashy offense, not a QB-friendly system. Glenn.
“I think, No. 1, Coach Glenn,” Fields said. “I’ve played against him early in my career. I know how passionate he is about the game, the way he coaches, the way his players play. So I think that was the biggest thing for me.”

And that tracks. Glenn saw Fields up close when he was the Lions’ defensive coordinator, scheming against him twice a year. He saw the highs, the lows, the flashes of brilliance buried under a mess of bad circumstances.

Now, as the Jets’ head coach, Glenn isn’t just taking a flyer on Fields—he’s betting on him. That’s a shift for Fields, who’s spent most of his NFL career being the guy teams move on from, not forward with. First, the Bears handed his job to Caleb Williams. Then, the Steelers made it clear they were riding with Russell Wilson. In New York? He’s not just another QB in the room. He’s wanted.

And that’s why this might finally work. Sure, Fields’ record—10-28 as a starter, 40 touchdowns, 30 picks—doesn’t scream “franchise savior.” But numbers don’t tell you how many times he was running for his life behind a shaky O-line or trying to make magic in a broken system. Glenn knows what Fields can be, and for the first time in a long time, Fields has a coach who’s seen him at his best and still wants him. That’s not nothing.
So what now? He’s already locked in, already building something with his new coach. “For [Glenn] to want me here is definitely an honor, and I’m going to put it all on the line for him and do all I can to help this team be successful.” No hesitation. No looking over his shoulder. Just a QB finally in a place that believes in him.
