The NFL set the 2026 NFL Draft to be held in Pittsburgh, fulfilling Governor Josh Shapiro’s wish. This announcement is a significant milestone for Pittsburgh, as it marks 50 years since the city first hosted the event that eventually evolved into the NFL Draft back in 1936.
The NFL chose Pittsburgh as an ideal destination due to its strong connection to the early days of professional football. However, the league has not yet confirmed the exact location within Pittsburgh where it will hold the draft. However, it is likely to take place on the North Shore near Acrisure Stadium and Stage AE.
Pittsburgh chosen as host for the 2026 NFL Draft
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed the decision on Wednesday morning, saying, “The NFL Draft is one of the biggest, most-anticipated sporting events of the year, and we’re thrilled to partner with the Pittsburgh Steelers and VisitPITTSBURGH for our 2026 event. We have a unique opportunity to spotlight this wonderful community on a global stage, benefiting Pittsburgh’s economy and entertaining football fans from all markets.”
The NFL shared the news on Instagram and Art Rooney II, President of the Pittsburgh Steelers expressed his excitement saying. He said, “This will be an amazing event that will highlight everything the region has to offer on a national and international level.” The decision follows a year-long effort by the Steelers and the City of Pittsburgh to host the NFL Draft. VisitPITTSBURGH and the Steelers officially submitted their bid late last year.

Burt Lauten, a spokesman for the Steelers, said, “We believe our city will be an excellent host to showcase the great history that connects Western Pennsylvania to the early roots of professional football and the evolution of the game through the decades.”
However, Josh Shapiro has been a significant advocate for bringing the NFL Draft to Pittsburgh.
Josh Shapiro on Pittsburgh’s progress for the NFL draft
Shapiro highlighted Pittsburgh’s robust economy and development, stating, “As the birthplace of America — and as we prepare to celebrate our country’s 250th birthday in 2026 — the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will be a central hub of economic activity over the next several years, and we would be honored for the NFL Draft to be a centerpiece of these celebrations.” Shapiro also highlighted Pennsylvania’s experience hosting other major sports events, including the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Philadelphia, and the 2026 PGA Championship.
Hosting the NFL Draft is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Pittsburgh. The 2017 NFL Draft in Philadelphia generated a substantial economic impact, with an estimated $94.9 million spent in the city and 30,000 jobs created during the event. Shapiro aims to replicate this success in Pittsburgh.
As the city prepares to host the NFL Draft, it will join a lineup of significant upcoming events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. Local and state officials’ enthusiasm and preparation efforts, along with the support of the NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers, will make the 2026 NFL Draft a memorable event.
