Are the Bills' game management issues a sign of deeper problems within the team?

The Texans hunted down the Buffalos. It’s the week 5 SNF game. Josh Allen and his team were favorites to win the game, but Ka’imi Fairbairn scored the 59-yard field goal, handing them a 20-23 defeat. This loss could have been averted. But they failed. Now, they sit at a 3-2 win-loss record.

After the game, they are being criticized left, right, and center. Ex-NFLer Kurt Benkert tweeted, “The bills with the worst game management of all time.” However, his comment begs the question, is it the case? Let’s review the game.

Texans pushed Josh Allen and his team into a corner in the first quarter itself. While Tyler Bass opened the scoring in the game with a field goal, Cam Akers and Nico Collins made two touchdowns. In the 2nd quarter, Fairbairn scored a field goal with 00:00 on the clock. At halftime, the Bills were reeling at 3-17.

However, Josh Allen & co. came back stronger. While Fairbairn scored another FG in the 3rd quarter, James Cook and Keon Coleman made 2 touchdowns. At the end of the quarter, the score read 17-20 favoring Texans. It was comparatively easy for them in the 4th quarter. When Tyler Bass scored the FG, the Bills were ready to equal the 20-20 scores. But Fairbairn’s third field goal with 3 seconds remaining changed the result.

With 3 FGs, the kicker set a record for the Texans. He has been impressive.

This is his 8th NFL season. When Fairbairn started the game, he was second only to Kris Brown, who has scored 767 FG points. With his 1st field goal, the kicker equaled the veteran. And with his 2nd goal in the game, he overtook him and sat in the top position.

Those who watched today’s game would never forget it. The kicker looked like a beast today. Such an impeccable timing! His last field goal gave the team their 4th win in 5 matches. But the defeat has brought out several questions for the rival quarterback, Josh Allen.

His stats are being compared to those of a rookie. Allen finished the game at 9 of 30 passes with 131 yards and a touchdown. He also made an unwanted record. That is, he recorded the lowest pass completion rate in the last 30 years (for 30 passes and more). This game has given him new things to think about.
