The NFL quarterback carousel is spinning faster than a Patrick Mahomes no-look pass, and three young gunslingers are riding high. But are Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, and CJ Stroud ready to join the league’s elite, or as the old saying goes, “One swallow does not a summer make” are they just one bad season away?

On a recent episode of “First Things First,” Wright put Love’s breakout season under the microscope, pointing out that the Packers QB’s success came from a “tiny sample” of games. “It is a tiny sample from a guy that doesn’t have a built-in large sample of high-level college the Blue Chip Prospect type of thing,” Wright explained, cautioning against premature coronations.

But Chris Broussard isn’t ready to bench Love just yet. He’s all in on the young QB’s potential, stating, “CJ Stroud is actually I think ahead of Jordan in terms of that next Superstar.” Broussard backed up his claim with some eye-popping stats: “Over those last eight games the 18 touchdowns the one pick he beat Kansas City he beat Detroit Chicago.”

Love’s journey from Aaron Rodgers’ understudy to a potential franchise quarterback has been nothing short of cinematic. In the 2023 season, he threw for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns, leading the Packers to the playoffs. His performance against the Cowboys in the wild-card round was the stuff of legend, posting a near-perfect passer rating in his playoff debut.

But Wright stirred the pot further, saying, “I am curious which of these young guys that have shown superstar flashes is going to have the massive regression year.” It’s like he’s playing quarterback Russian roulette, and someone’s bound to come up with snake eyes.

Young NFL Quarterbacks ready to take over

While Love is trying to fill the enormous cleats left by Rodgers, he’s not the only young QB making waves. CJ Stroud, the Houston Texans’ wunderkind, has been turning heads faster than a Barry Sanders juke move. His teammate, Tank Dell, is already making bold predictions: “I for sure feel like C.J. got the opportunity to be the best quarterback in the league.”

Stroud’s rookie season was nothing to sneeze at, throwing for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns. He’s got the Texans faithful dreaming of Super Bowl glory once again.

Then there’s Brock Purdy, the former Mr. Irrelevant who’s been anything but for the 49ers. He finished second in the league in third- and fourth-down conversion rate on passing attempts in 2023. Not bad for a guy who was picked last in the draft, right?

But here’s where things get interesting. Chris Simms, former NFL quarterback turned analyst, threw a Hail Mary into the debate. He claimed early this month, “If [Green Bay Packers quarterback] Jordan Love played in the Super Bowl (with San Francisco), the 49ers would be the Super Bowl champions.” That’s a hot take hotter than a linebacker’s postgame ice bath!

As we gear up for the 2024 season, all eyes will be on these young quarterbacks. Will they continue to light up the scoreboard like a pinball machine, or will one of them fumble their way into Wright’s predicted regression? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – the future of NFL quarterbacking is looking brighter than the stadium lights on a Monday night.
