Packers fans booed at an Obama event—Is sports loyalty stronger than political allegiance?

It seems like Illinois fans don’t muck about when it comes to their sports. Maybe wearing a cheesehead and approaching people in Chicago is not a great idea. Nevertheless, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers did it. Of course, the cardinal sin got him booed, but Jordan Love led Green Bay Packers and caught some strays.

Evers went to show his support for Kamala Harris, but things went awry at the roll call moment when the name dropped the Green Bay Packers but didn’t stop there. The vociferous sound of boos echoed over the crowded venue at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

He gave a shoutout to “Badger Jason Rae”. Moreover, he stunned everyone when he said, “As a proud governor of the great state of Wisconsin, we’re home to the Green Bay Packers”. A Myriad of supporters wearing cheeseheads surrounded Evers as he went on to blaspheme the Chicago Bears fans.

“We’re home of the Wisconsin Badgers. We’re home of the Milwaukee Brewers. And the Milwaukee Bucks, as well as our best U.S. senator, Tammy Baldwin, and our great congregational folks, Gwen Moore, and Mark Pocan,” Evers added later and said that he was “jazzed as hell” about where Wisconsin stood.

That maybe was not the best foot to put forward during the roll call, especially when the Bears and Packers rivalry dates to 1921, and is perhaps the oldest rivalry in the NFL. Nonetheless, Evers and his entourage cheered, celebrating the 107-95 W/L the Green Bay team has amassed over 10 decades. Of course, the Bears loyalists are salty about Wisconsin’s Gov. wearing cheeseheads in their city.

Have an interesting take?

As it turns out, Jordan Love’s Packers and the Bears are playing each other twice this season. Maybe Caleb Williams has it in him to tip the tides and give the Chicago Bears, a team that former President Barack Obama has been rooting for since 1985, also the year he moved to Chicago.

It also happens the former POTUS took to the podium at the DNC and gave a heartfelt speech, all while backing Kamala Harris for the Presidency. However, there’s more to Barack Obama than politics.

Barack Obama on Monday Night Football

“I believe that’s a touchdown people,” is what most Chicago fans would recall of the 2022 season when the Chicago Bears scored a touchdown against the New England Patriots. There Barack Obama was with the Manning brothers discussing plays and what he would have done in the position.

That was the year when Justin Fields was in his prime dual-threat era. And, as it happens, this TD also came from the former Bears QB1. But the former President’s roots with the Bears go deeper than that. While talking about the Chicago team, we can’t ignore the ’85 Bears and the Super Bowl XX title they won.

To honor the ’85 team, Barack Obama welcomed the Super Bowl XX champs to the White House for a house visit in 2011. Richard Dent, Willie Gault, Coach Mike Ditka, Coach Buddy Ryan, and many others from the Super Bowl-winning team were there and honored by Obama.
