Is Brock Purdy the reason why the San Francisco 49ers lost at the Super Bowl LVIII? Well, according to sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, he is! Probably, that’s why he once listed the 49ers QB on 17th rank.
The overtime loss at the Super Bowl shattered the dreams of every Niners faithful. While some blame the team’s lack of knowledge about overtime rules, some blame major on-field mistakes like losing the ball in the red zone or the chance to recover the ball. But, according to Chris Simms, the real reason behind their loss is the “Mr. Irrelevant,” if Jordan Love had been there, he would have defeated Patrick Mahomes.
In the latest episode of “Chris Simms Unbuttoned,” the host made an odd comparison between Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, and Patrick Mahomes. He believes a change in the quarterback position could have done the job for the 49ers. The analyst claimed, “If [Green Bay Packers quarterback] Jordan Love played in the Super Bowl (with San Francisco), the 49ers would be the Super Bowl champions.” This means he would’ve beaten Patrick Mahomes in the big event. But how?

Chris Simms on Jordan Love and Brock Purdy:

Simms explained comparing Purdy and Love: “If you went back (NFC Divisional game), Jordan Love had the 2 interceptions at the end of the game, Jordan Love in that game played better than Brock Purdy. Brock Purdy should have thrown 7 interceptions in that game. He got lucky that night. We’d all be talking differently if Green Bay could catch.” In addition to it, the former NFL quarterback Love’s performance at the end of the season. He mentioned that in the last 10 weeks, the Packers let Love play more freely, and he performed very well.
Despite a rough start with a 2-5 record, Love led the Packers to a strong finish, securing the NFC’s no. 7 playoff seed. They even defeated the No. 2 seed, the Dallas Cowboys. However, in the divisional round against the No. 1 seed 49ers, the Packers lost with 3 points (24-21). But Simms still believes Love played better than Purdy in the game, even though the Packers QB made two crucial mistakes, including an interception that ended the game.
So, it wasn’t the head coach who ditched the running game with a second-half lead and overlooked the overtime rules. It wasn’t the tight end who missed the chance to recover a loose ball. It wasn’t the running back who lost the ball in the red zone. It wasn’t the starting WRs who managed just 6 out of 17 catches. Even it wasn’t the offensive line that allowed pressure on over half the pass plays. The blame falls squarely on Brock Purdy.

Is Jordan Love really better than Brock Purdy?
Brock Purdy and Jordan Love are among the top quarterbacks in the NFL. As per stats, over the last 10 games (excluding their 2024 playoff faceoff), they’ve both performed at an elite level. Purdy’s stats show: “7 wins, 3 losses, 70.5 completion percentage, 288.4 passing yards per game, 21 TD passes, 10 interceptions, 113.7 quarterback rating.” Whereas, Love’s stats show: “7 wins, 3 losses, 68.5 completion percentage, 271.1 passing yards per game, 23 TD passes, 3 interceptions, 111.3 quarterback rating.”
As per these stats, both quarterbacks have similar records and impressive performances. However, Purdy has a higher completion rate and takes more risks, resulting in more INTs. However, Love is more cautious, which leads to fewer INTs. So, choosing between the two is obviously a challenging task. But the last playoff matchup between them has somewhat cleared who has the upper hand right now.

And if we talk about Patrick Mahomes, the opinions might be different for the two. In their last face-off, the Packers defeated the Chiefs. However, Mahomes being a game-changer, could have turned the destiny around if it’s Super Bowl, as we saw in the overtime.
