Does Jordan Love really deserve to be the highest-paid QB, or is this just hype?

Jordan Love hits the jackpot! The Green Bay Packers quarterback Love was awaiting his contract extension this offseason. He even skipped training camps that started on July 24. And now it seems, that move paid off for the QB.

According to the NFL Insider, Ian Rapoport, on his official X account, “Sources: #Packers QB Jordan Love has agreed to a 4-year extension worth $220M, which makes him the highest paid QB in NFL history despite only starting 1 full season. Deal was negotiated by David Mulugheta and Andrew Kessler of @AthletesFirst.

That’s a colossal amount to receive as Love has just taken over Aaron Rodgers’ and played only 1 full season as a starter. This news created a buzz among NFL fans on social media, with one X user commenting, “This is insane.” Another one commented, “The kids are saying Jordan Love is the truth. They’re right.” As per another NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, Jordan Love “also gets a record $75M Signing Bonus plus $155M in new full guarantees.

The battle will begin from now on!

The Packers’ journey with Jordan Love has been quite a ride. After drafting him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, they had Aaron Rodgers leading the team and winning MVPs. As a result, Love spent years waiting for his chance. But finally, when Rodgers was traded, Love got his shot. With Love’s rookie contract ending last year, the Packers had to make a move, so they extended his deal by one year for up to $22.5 million, with $13.5 million guaranteed. This was also done to see whether Love performs as per expectations or not, especially after Rodgers’ exit.

Consequently, Love turned things around impressively in the last season. In the latter half of that season, he shined, throwing 16 touchdowns and just one interception over the final eight games. This strong finish earned him a new contract that puts him among the top quarterbacks in the NFL, with an average annual salary of $55 million, matching stars like Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow. However, now this contract can put pressure on other quarterbacks who are waiting on their extensions. Players like Brock Purdy, and Dak Prescott, all fall into this category. However, a few hours earlier to Love’s new deal, Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa too signed a hefty deal with his team.

Meanwhile, the Packers are clearly optimistic about Love’s future. Despite only having 18 career starts, his recent performance has convinced the team he’s worth the big investment. Love’s new contract reflects this confidence and sets a new benchmark for quarterback salaries.
The Packers will kick off their 2024 season against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 6, and the game will be streamed on Peacock.
