2023’s surprise package was easily Jordan Love. When the backup QB had to step into the big shoes of Aaron Rodgers, there were speculations and doubts in the air. But the 25-year-old took on the reigns of his team effortlessly and proved himself, surpassing everybody’s expectations.

In his first season as the starter, the quarterback not only led the Green Bay Packers into the playoffs but also garnered 4,765 passing yards, 39 total touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Although this offseason there’s a buzz about his contract extension, a former Jets player feels Love deserves the extension, and that too a generous one!

Jordan Love predicted to be the “next great quarterback“

As the 2024 season inches closer, the talks of the next breakout quarterback are already abuzz in the NFL sphere. While C.J. Stroud is a hot favorite for many, former receiver Plaxico Burress has his eyes set on the Packers quarterback. Having “a great eye for talent” and a knack for recognizing “greatness“, as he claims himself, the former league star has high hopes for Love.

“I believe that this young man [Jordan Love] is on the trajectory to be the next great quarterback in this league”, said Burress on The Carton Show. “And I say that because when I watch him throw that football, and I watch him read defenses, and I watch how fast the ball comes out of his hand, he knows what’s going on“. The player-turned-analyst also pointed out that Love had the chance to learn from Packers legend A-Rod for three years, which would also help him in his journey as the starter for the franchise.

The host, Craig Carton, also agreed with Burress’ views, saying that Love “ended the season hotter than a pistol“. With all the acclaim comes another burning question: the contract situation, which the team and the player have been keeping under wraps.

Can Love become the highest-paid QB this year?

Love might be in for a humongous contract. The quarterback signed a one-year extension last season worth $22.5 million, so an extension might be well in sight. While the quarterback is playing his cards close to his chest, he did share that talks about a new contract were underway. Furthermore, his agents had revealed earlier that the deal would be ideally finalized before July 22, when the Packers commence their training camp.

Now comes the money part. Talking about figures, this offseason has seen some monumental contracts, including Jared Goff’s $212 million deal. If the Lions quarterback’s extension is anything to go by, Love could be in for a generous deal with the Packers. However, Burress estimates an even larger figure. “The Green Bay Packers are going to make this man the highest-paid quarterback in football”. The spot is currently held by Bengals’ Joe Burrow and Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, with an average annual salary of $55 million. It’s hard to predict if Love would get such a hefty contract, considering he has just one year of starting experience.

If the Packers fail to reach common ground with their quarterback on the contract extension, Jordan Love will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. If they do, Green Bay might have their new franchise quarterback, who’s been trained by one of their former best.
