Thank you for taking a kid from Mississippi and making him feel at home in the Pacific Northwest,” DK Metcalf wrote in his farewell post to the Seahawks on Wednesday. After six years of donning the Seahawks‘ colors, the WR requested a trade from the team. And the reason? DK never spoke about it, and neither did the Seahawks. Maybe the WR just wanted a fresh start. And after Seattle found a long-term answer in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, maybe DK thought it was time to find a better home. So, were the Seahawks okay with Metcalf leaving the team?

Well, to state the truth, the Metcalf’s request wasn’t a surprising one for them, at least. Last week, Adam Schefter reported that DK had requested a trade from the team. “The request came today after a series of conversations over the past two weeks. Metcalf prefers a contender,” Schefter wrote. A few days later, the Steelers agreed on a contract with him.

Now, this might have come as a surprise to many out there, but for John Schneider, it was not. The Seattle GM, on Thursday, spoke to Seattle Sports radio. Talking about Metcalf, Schneider shared, “There were discussions that DK and I were having, a lot of personal discussions. I thought we could fix it, handle it, whatever it was. At the end of the day, it was a no, and he wanted to be traded.” And Schneider said: Accepted! soon after the discussion.

It sounds like the Seahawks tried to work it out, but DK Metcalf had already made up his mind. “We want guys who want to be here. We want guys who believe in what we’re doing. You’d have to ask him (for specifics). For one reason or another, he just wanted to move on and get a fresh start,” added Scheinder.

The team not only lost DK but also had to say goodbye to their 2022 Comeback Player of the Year.

John Schneider breaks down the Geno Smith trade

It became apparent that we weren’t going to be able to get a deal done.” That’s what John Schneider had to say about their quarterback. Geno had been on the Seahawks’ squad for the past six years. The 34-year-old had one year left on his $75M deal, so the Seahawks offered him an extension. But that money was not enough. According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Seattle offered Smith a deal with $40 million in the first year, but the QB wanted more.

The Seahawks made a similar offer to the one the Rams gave their QB, Matthew Stafford. We made an offer to Geno, tried to extend him… Yeah, it wasn’t a very long negotiation. And so, as a staff, we had to be prepared to pivot,” added Schneider. So, after a failed contract negotiation, both parties decided to part ways. It’s still unclear how much the Raiders are paying Geno, but he is to pocket $31 million this year. According to a few reports, Geno and the Raiders are still working on his contract.

On Thursday, Geno broke his silence on leaving the team after six years. The 34-year-old posted a parting note for the Seahawks: My love for Seattle cannot be described in words. I wish I could’ve done more to express that. Thank you for a memorable six years,” Geno wrote. Well, after Smith’s departure, the Seahawks found their new QB, signing Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million deal. They will be paying him $33.5 million per year.
