It’s tough to sit out the most important games in a season. Especially when you have been performing well during the regular season. Such is the case with left guard Joe Thuney of the Kansas City Chiefs. Will he be able to recover in time to play for the Super Bowl?

The Chiefs will be taking on the powerhouse San Francisco 49ers on 11th February. A game that is destined to be a tactical chess match. Thuney’s inclusion could be a boon for the defending champions.

Thuney already has 3 Super Bowls to his name, the first two with the New England Patriots and one last year with the Chiefs. However, the 31-year-old might miss out on starting another Super Bowl game and potentially winning it as well.

The 2X Pro Bowler injured his pectoral muscle in the AFC divisional playoff round against the Buffalo Bills. Hence, could not participate against the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC Championship. Now, he is racing against the time.

“For Joe (Thuney), it’s a strength thing. Right now, it’s not strong enough”, said head coach Andy Reid after the practice session. Typically, it takes 4-6 weeks for a pectoral injury to completely heal. But, Thuney is staying positive, he said, “Not trying to think too much, do what I can each day”. However, the time is running out and the Super Bowl is knocking on the doors. So who will play at his position?

Contingency plan for Thuney’s injury

The Chiefs cannot take any chances in the Super Bowl game against the Niners. Guard Nick Allegretti started the game against the Ravens because of Thuney’s injury. And HC Reid is swaying towards him starting the Super Bowl as well.

“I would probably bet towards Allegretti playing”, said Reid to the press. And the 27-year-old has the veteran’s blessing as well. Thuney said he was “so proud” of the youngster’s performance and expects him to be the star if Thuney himself isn’t able to start the game.
