Did Joe Schoen just seal his fate with that laugh in John Mara's face?

An altercation in Giants! HBO’s Hard Knocks, a sports docuseries based on Giants has been released recently. It featured GM Joe Schoen’s strategies for the team for the upcoming season, and his relationship with John Mara, owner of the New York Giants. The buzz was undeniably created among NFL enthusiasts and executives, featuring the Giants’ future at high risk.

In HBO’s latest episode, John Mara‘s warnings to the GMs about Saquon Barkley, an NFL RB potentially losing the Giants for the rival team, the Philadelphia Eagles was featured. After the clip massively spread on the internet, during his latest podcast episode “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, which premiered on 17 July, Colin Cowherd, FOX Sports’ commentator took a humorous jibe at Giants GM. He addressed him as a ‘Mickey Mouse’,

“You’re a GM do you think that’s what it looks like with less sne and Stan Kony and Sean McVay potentially Brett Veach and the hunt family that’s Mickey Mouse Joe Schoen’s smiling the underlings are uncomfortably looking down the owner’s got his hand on his face and Joe Schoen answer is well,” Cowherd remarked aggressively.

Barkley left the Giants and signed with the Eagles with a $37.75 million deal after spending six seasons with New York. The Giants owner acknowledged in the show that he won’t be happy with this unfavorable take of the Giants GM.  “I’ll have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia, I’ll tell you that, As I’ve told you, I’ve been around enough players, but he’s the most popular player we have, by far,” Mara remarked, according to  Hard Knocks show.

As, in the clip, it was shown that the Giant’s GM was comfortable with Barkley leaving, as he never wanted the NFL RB back in the team. Schoen basically laughed in the guy who signed his paychecks’ face and told the owner to go take a nap, addressing him as “Grandpa”. It was absolutely the interesting part of the docuseries.

Thus, it is really a critical moment for the team’s success as the GM and owner do not seem to be on the same wavelength as shown in the clip. This take came after Saquon Barkley was traded to the rival Eagles.  So, like other NFL commentators, a US sports media personality,  Colin also questioned the relationship between Joe and John.

Apart from that, he also shed light on the Giants owner’s embarrassment as he does not want to lose his star player. He further remarked, “Giants owner] John Mara is sitting there on the table, and this is before Saquon Barkley in free agency left for the rival Eagles … and Mara is just really uncomfortable with his star Saquon Barkley going to rival Philadelphia. That’s really bad. The owner’s not happy, Joe Schoen is smiling like it’s really uncomfortable.” Cowherd stated.

Cowherd also emphasized the comfort that should be between the GM and owner of the NFL team, pointing out the Giants’s high-profile relationship. “The one thing I do know about being a general manager … you gotta have some sort of relationship with the owner that’s comfortable. You have to trust the owner. You gotta be able to read your owner’s temperament,” he further stated

Thus, the Giants’ GM’s decision led to Barkley departing the franchise and accepting a contract with the Eagles worth up to $46.75 million, with $26 million guaranteed.  Barkley’s trading has been distressing the Giants owner. Yet, it would be interesting to see if the Giants might have a healthy season coming up without the star RB in the team.
