On Jan 1, Joe Burrow expressed his desire for the coveted MVP status. However, despite the Bengals’ week 18 win over the Steelers, keeping their playoff hopes alive, the QB’s MVP dreams have taken a hit. Burrow remains laser-focused on finishing his season strong. In an insightful ESPN chat with NFL legend Cam Newton, Burrow opened up about his changed take on the MVP award.
Burrow has accepted that this year’s award is out of his reach, although he deserves it. “I think I’m deserving of it,” Burrow said. “But the MVP award usually goes to the quarterback of the best team, and that’s not us this year.” Burrow said this after Newton likened his records to NFL legends and asked, “How does that make you feel, bro?” However, Burrow’s take on the MVP debate was not so clear a few days back.
“We have so many things in common.” 😅

Earlier on Tuesday, when asked about his MVP bid, Burrow seemed unsure. “I doubt it. Usually you gotta win your division… It is what it is. That’s how it’s voted. I don’t necessarily disagree with it, I would say,” he said. Racking over 4,600 passing yards with 42 touchdowns to his name, Burrow has been one of the league’s standout players. However, the Bengals’ 8-8 record doesn’t help Burrow’s case. Burrow’s candid acceptance on the matter shows how much he values team success over personal accolades. What’s next for Burrow, then?
He’s focusing on leading the Bengals into the postseason with MVP out of reach. “We got a chance to go and make a statement; we obviously need help on Sunday, but, you know, we can control what we can control and finish our season the right way. Guys are excited about that opportunity. Myself included,” he said. Burrow knows the playoff hopes are still alive. However, it’s not in their hands anymore. But how can he shape the team’s future beyond this season?
Burrow might not be lifting the MVP trophy this season. But he’s already setting his sights on the future of the Bengals. He made it known that keeping his star wideouts, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins is a top priority. Now, he has come up with a second demand.
Burrow’s next move: pushing for Mike Gesicki’s return
After the Bengal’s win against the Steelers, Burrow made his second demand clear. He wants Mike Gesicki to be retained. “That guy was so valuable for us all year,” he stated. “And a guy like that, in my opinion, we need to bring back.” Gesicki has been a key target for Burrow in the passing game. However, the 2024 season saw Gesicki put up solid but modest numbers.
Mike recorded 57 receptions and accumulated 597 yards. He also scored two key touchdowns. The stat books show his impact in the end zone as limited. But it’s not always about one’s personal accolades. It’s about how they contribute to the team’s victories and rally around their teammates.

By advocating for Gesicki, he’s making it clear that building continuity within the team is crucial. The quarterback knows that success is about creating a foundation for future dominance. Riding on a five-game winning streak, the Bengals are aspiring to a playoff run. “We’ve won the last five; we won today. Put ourselves in a spot to potentially get in with some help. The odds are long, but we got a shot,” Burrow said.
Burrow’s performance in the 2024 season has certainly set the stage for future MVP conversations. Even if this year isn’t his. Burrow himself attests to that. “I’m proud of the season that I’ve had, you know, I’d love to win an MVP at some point in my career,” he said, reflecting on his season.
