The Washington Commanders might just be one of those teams who will become completely unrecognizable by the end of this upcoming draft. They hired Dan Quinn as HC, and then recently hired Adam Peters as the new GM for the team. Not only that, but they’ve also hired the former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers as an advisor. Amidst all these changes, the QB-needy team might be looking at prospects like Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and JJ McCarthy at this point for their first pick.

Hence, with all this shuffling around, the team has a new mentality going forward and there might be a new set of ideologies too that may come into play. Especially when the draft is near, and the team desperately needs a quarterback. The Commanders have 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft and there are a couple of names that come to mind as their top choice. Tom Pelissero gave more insights into Washington’s stream of thoughts.

Tom Pelissero came to The Rich Eisen Show and brought to light the fact that the Commanders have a new head coach, a new owner (Josh Harris, who bought the Commanders for $6.05B last year), a new GM and a new advisor, and all these people come with a different insight to rebuild the team. The NFL insider reported that he’s attended meetings with the Commanders’ stakeholders and a couple of other GMs in the last couple of weeks.

“Every year there’s a surprise in the top 10 if not the top 5, something you know that people were not anticipating was going to happen. Every GM is trying to figure out what the other GMs are doing, which is why I thought it was interesting. Everybody’s been talking about Washington with Drake May or Jayden Daniels. When I was at the league meeting a couple of weeks ago you know when I was having these conversations with other GMs, the people who know the Washington brain trust, granted Adam Peters the first-time GM, you got a first-time owner in Josh Harris they’re going to have a different process,” said Pelissero.

He then added, “They got Bob Myers the former Warriors GM, who was a big part. He is in every meeting and giving them advice on these things. It can go a lot of different directions but people who know Adam Peters within the NFL that they have information but just knowing him knowing where he comes from how he was trained think JJ McCarthy could be in the mix too.”

Pelissero further substantiated his thoughts of the second pick affecting the other options and availabilities for the teams following the Commanders, stating “So, whatever that happens in number 2 then that’s going to dictate what the options are for the Patriots at number 3 in terms of who they trade out, if they were willing to, there absolutely are teams that would be willing to trade into that number 3 overall pick, and then if its quarterback with the top 3 picks, gives Arizona the opportunity to trade with somebody who goes up and takes the 4th one.”

Everyone is waiting for the Bears and Commanders to make their move so they can plan accordingly as well. Per ESPN, Adam Peters will make the final call on the QB as Dan Quinn also sets up his selection criteria for the Commanders’ new leader.

How does Dan Quinn plan to put his new QB to the test?

A recent report from ESPN pointed out that Quinn is looking at the new QB through the lens of a defensive coordinator. Quinn mentioned that he wanted to physically and mentally pressure the QB to test their mental fortitude going forth. The new HC has strict standards set for the drafting process, as he revealed to ESPN in a conversation. Being the former Cowboys DC, his thought process in hiring takes an unconventional approach.

“How quickly can they process something? ‘OK, it looks like zone but it’s really man-to-man. It’s two-high [safeties], it’s one high,'” Quinn said. “All the triggers you want to get to, can you do it after the ball gets in his hand? Can we disguise [defenses] to make them really have to figure it out after the snap? The best of the best? ‘I can process as I’m taking the ball, as I’m going through the play.’

The combined power of Kliff Kingsbury, Dan Quinn, and Adam Peters has been more than influential in working out Washington’s next move. Kingsbury, who’s worked with the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and even Caleb Williams will be instrumental in Washington’s drafting escapades. Their combined experience and overlapping pasts might as well be responsible for the next best thing in Washington.
