Defense wins championships—maybe the Chargers are taking this sports quote a bit too seriously. Like after their humiliating 32-12 exit against the Texans in the WildCard round, everything the Chargers had done well in their defense came to a crashing halt. So, with the onset of the offseason, the Chargers are wasting no time in getting their defense fixed before it’s too late.
Their first move comes in the form of a new safeties coach. After Chris O’Leary departed the Bolts to become Western Michigan’s defensive coordinator, the Chargers have also turned their attention to college. As per Pete Thamel on X, “the Chargers are set to hire former Florida State DC Adam Fuller as their team’s new safeties coach.” Well, Fuller comes with a vast range of experience in different defensive assistant positions in college. He spent four seasons as Florida State’s DC. Before that, he served a single year as Memphis’ DC. And almost 5 years with Marshall.

So, the ideas will probably won’t be a problem for Fuller when getting started in LA. However, his lack of experience in the NFL could be exposed. Because no matter how good of a coach you are. The NFL will probably not show you mercy where coaches come and go while only results matter. And Fuller, for one, would have some pretty big shoes to fill in LA. This Chargers defense is coming off a sensational season that saw them rank 1st in points allowed per game (17.7). 11th in yards allowed per game (324.4) and an equally magnificent red zone defense.
The Chargers’ resolute D-line allowed their opponents to score from only 45% of their red zone trips inside the 20-yard line. Even in goal-to-go situations where the chances of conceding a TD remain the highest, the Bolts only allowed their opponents to score 61% of the time they were in those spots. This shows the expectations from Fuller’s appointment will be to further enhance their defensive wall. And while he prepares to join Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff, the Chargers coach could receive yet another good news soon. Their cross-town rival Super Bowl-winning receiver could soon join them in LA.

Can the Chargers land Cooper Kupp from the Rams?
Remember the 2021 season when Kupp was coming off his first Pro Bowl year? Well, since that season when he recorded 1,947 receiving yards and scoped in 16 TDs, Kupp has failed to retrace that success. In his eight-year NFL career, the Rams WR has only crossed 1000 receiving yards twice, with injuries plaguing his career. And by the time next season comes along, Kupp will already be 32, staring at retirement in a few years. So, with consistency hurting Kupp’s impact in LA, the Rams took it upon themselves to decide on Kupp’s future.
And without wasting any time to prepare for next season. The Rams decided it would be in their best interest to move on from their star receiver. As Kupp said in his X post, “I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships.” Well, considering Kupp’s time in LA, he could probably select the Chargers to return next season. This will allow him to keep his family close while kickstarting a new chapter without having to move away from LA.
As for the Chargers, getting Kupp won’t be a big deal for now. They could probably send fourth and sixth-round picks to the Rams and trade for Kupp. Him joining the Chargers could be a huge boost for Justin Herbert, who mostly had no one other than Ladd McConkey last season. Yeah, Kupp’s physicality could be a concern for the Chargers. However, his talent and game-changing play capabilities cannot be questioned after all.
