There is an obvious connection between Jim Harbaugh, JJ McCarthy, and the Los Angeles Chargers. Thinking that the CFP Championship winner could join the Chargers wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea. For one, Harbaugh has molded him the way he wanted to, and secondly, Justin Herbert and JJ McCarthy would be a heck of a combo.
Ross Tucker and Rich Eisen weighed in on the dynamics of the former Michigan coach and their star QB playing together on the Rich Eisen Show. Some interesting facts and figures surfaced amid their conversation. But the stars are aligned with the Chargers because they have the 5th overall pick in the upcoming drafts and McCarthy may be the baton leader in the future.

The former NFL OT Ross Tucker wanted to know Eisen’s stance on McCarthy not getting the ball enough, the Michigan team choosing to “take the ball out of McCarthy’s hands,” and how it’s a “red flag” for the QB. Eisen’s assessment might have been a little crass to the people when he said, “You’re a moron,” to the people who thought the QB could not throw the ball.
Eisen mentioned how in the game against Penn State, Michigan ran the ball 32 times because their QB was hurt, and the Michigan team had a “major problem trying to block the right side of the offensive lines,” so they decided to run the ball.
“His deep passing, his accuracy, his guts, and his determination is exactly what you want at the position. He’s Jim Harbaugh’s spirit animal,” said Eisen of McCarthy. The other thing that makes more of a case for McCarthy to be drafted, per Eisen, was that he never complained about his team running the ball 32 times and losing out on maximizing his stats.
The situation made Ross Tucker draw a comparison to Andrew Luck, the former Colt QB who played at Stanford when Harbaugh coached the team.

“You can’t knock a guy for what he wasn’t asked to do. Like if you have bad throws from JJ McCarthy or bad reads, by all means, criticize him for that. But by saying no he didn’t do you know, if you go back to when Andrew Luck was at Stanford, they threw the ball more when Harbaugh was there,” said Tucker.
He further solidified his stance by saying, “But it’s not like they were throwing the ball about 40 times. He had Andrew Luck, and it’s not like Harbaugh was just throwing the ball, they were still running the ball a lot at Stanford. That’s what Harbaugh wants to do, that’s what he believes in.”

The comparison might have come out as illogical to some. But Eisen and his guest justified the reasoning behind low numbers. In his 2023 season at Michigan, McCarthy had 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns to his name. That’s after he was injured and Michigan tried to run the ball a lot. The big leagues are different and maybe if he gets drafted to the Chargers by some miracle, things will change.
