Did Jerry Jones' outburst reveal the true power dynamics between NFL owners and the media?

The last game of the Cowboys just ruined everything. Jerry Jones was in attendance, watching the devastating loss against the Lions on his birthday. Probably, this ignited him so much that in a Tuesday morning interview on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan and RJ,” he burst into anger. It happened when asked about the upgrade to his Cowboys’ roster, and the owner ended up threatening the radio show hosts.

Now this incident reveals a dark side of NFL media as well as Jerry Jones crossing the line, as per Mike Florio on Sunday Night Football on NFL on NBC. He highlighted, “….they haven’t been to the conference Championship game in 30 years, I think the hosts were totally fair trying to ask him why isn’t this? What it’s supposed to be? Yeah, Jerry [Jones] crossed the line here, he was out of line.”

In addition to that, Florio and his co-host, Michael Holley, also believe that Jerry Jones’ behavior that day highlights the power dynamics in sports media, especially when teams like the expensive Cowboys hold significant control over local media outlets. In short, the analysts meant that even though Jones doesn’t directly pay the radio hosts, his influence as the Cowboys’ billionaire owner is enough to pressure them.

Hence, Florio sees this as part of a larger issue within NFL media, where teams and owners expect reporters to “fall in line” and avoid asking challenging questions. Nevertheless, Jerry Jones has already tried to defend his meltdown to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. He said,I don’t know that I would go as far as (calling) the volume connotation as yelling. OK? But the facts are that if I’m going to be grilled by the tribunal, I don’t need it to be by the guys I’m paying.”

In addition to that, Jerry Jones further explained, “I can take it from fans and take it from other people. I take a lot of pride in how fair and how much I try to work with the media, we’re brothers and sisters. But I was a little frustrated there today. … The wrong ones were doing the questioning.” Now all this seems to be a very vague answer to justify the outburst or arguably threatening the hosts at the show, as it has surely hurt the two.

What did the radio hosts say about Jerry Jones’ anger?

After being threatened to get fired from Jerry Jones, the 105.3 The Fan’s radio hosts, Shan Shariff and RJ Choppy, didn’t seem impressed by the 82-year-old anymore. During Wednesday morning’s show, the hosts recalled a quick recap of the incident to the fans once again, giving their point of view on Jones’ meltdown.

Shariff showed his frustration, saying, “It’s really insulting, really demeaning, really insulting and again, out of nowhere. We have done 14 years of interviews with this man.” Chiming into his point, RJ Choppy too made sure to ignore him with frustration. He said, “I didn’t get upset with it, but it was like, ‘You know what? Screw you man.”

Not only that! but Shariff also made sure to clarify that while he and Choppy get special perks – “like access to Jones, head coach Mike McCarthy and certain players” – because their show airs on Cowboys’ flagship station, it’s Audacy, not Jones who pays them. Hence, the hosts believe they are insulted by the Dallas team’s owner.
