This season’s been a rough ride for Jerry Jones and his squad. From a dilapidated 7-8 record adding a blotch to their resume, to now the team getting eliminated from the playoffs, there’s very been very less to look forward to for the Dallas Cowboys. But amid the misery, the top management is far from losing hope, well evident by Jerry Jones’ daughter Charlotte’s latest update after her team’s 26-24 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But before we get to that part…

The Cowboys made sure to go out a bang on Sunday against the Bucs. Amidst the heartbreak of being eliminated from the playoff race even before the game started—courtesy of the Washington Commanders’ win over the Philadelphia Eagles four hours prior—Dak Prescott and his team gave their boss something to smile about with the win. It was a narrow two-point win. Despite Bucs’ star QB Baker Mayfield scoring two TDs and racking up 304 yards, they couldn’t pull through. Cowboys’ QB Cooper Rush featured in the win with 292 yards and one TD. Also, two field goals by Brandon Aubrey in the second and third quarters gave Dallas a lead, which the Bucs weren’t able to get rid of. That was despite Ryan Miller’s TD after a 13-yard pass from Mayfield in the final quarter.

Looks like the Cowboys have been messing with other teams‘ playoff hopes—on a bittersweet note. “Before the game was a real punch in the gut, to say the least. You just kind of take that moment to sit back and watch, watch some of the guys warm up, watch the interactions in the locker room. Wasn’t much different than a normal game. You’re just wanting to keep your mind in it, too, and stay focused. I thought our guys did a hell of a job,” the team’s HC Mike McCarthy opined after the game about their playoff ousting, before adding, “I just love the way our team plays. I just can’t say enough about the locker room. Their pride. Their character. Their toughness. Resilience.”

Adding to the moment, Jerry Jones’ daughter and Cowboys’executive vice president, and chief brand officer Charlotte Jones, also shared her pride on Instagram on December 22. Posting a picture with the Cowboys’ management team, she captioned it, Never quit! #celebrationselfie #dallascowboys.” And her father wasn’t too far behind either…

“Proud of those guys. They wouldn’t give it up out there. So I’m real, real proud of them,” Jerry Jones said. He also heavily praised Mike McCarthy, who’s already been subject to heavy criticism for his seemingly lackluster coaching skills.

“And Mike McCarthy, he just won’t let them not think they’re playing for the Super Bowl out there. He won’t let them do it. So proud of that. We both looked like we had lost somebody, and so it was something you had to kind of get over the reality that we weren’t going to go. All I can say is what a good job, how good a job he’s doing. Don’t have thoughts that I would share as to anything about what we do … after we’re through playing this year,” he said.

Having said that, the nervousness was palpable in the Buccaneers’ locker room…

The sensible thing to do was to play your backups. You’re not trying to win a meaningless game, but a...more

The Bucs are already planning their comeback

“We lost, we fell back in the pack,” the Bucs HC Todd Bowles was as honest as one can be after their loss. For the team currently stands at a critical juncture—their playoff chances now majorly depend on the Atlanta Falcons. If Kirk Cousins’ team lose at least one of their remaining games, and the Bucs win all of theirs, that would put their record at 9-8, and 10-7 respectively, giving Mayfield’s team a chance.

In the off-chance that the Falcons emerge as the division champions, the Bucs still have a Wild Card spot to look forward to. With just two playoff spots remaining, the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Commanders would have to lose their remaining three games for the Bucs.

But Bowles is ready. As per a post-game conference, the HC confidently stated, “We’ve got to eat it. Can’t spend too much time on it. We had our chances just like everybody else. But it’s a long season. We have two more games to go. We’ve got to take care of us and let everything else take care of itself.” However, he also acknowledged exactly where they fell short…

“It’s disappointing. All three phases, plus coaching. We’ve got to coach them better. We’ve got to play better on special teams. We’ve got to play better offensively and defensively.”

Mayfield, on the other hand, appeared extremely optimistic. Talking about the team’s overall performance, he said,  “I’ve said it all along, this group will not quit. I’ll be damned if anybody does. That’s the standard we try and set,” before adding, “It’d be nice not to be in that situation if we had taken care of business earlier in the game, but it comes down to little things late in the game and we try to execute. We gave ourselves a chance. The defense gave us a chance as well. So, we’ve got to execute.”

As for what their mindset will be moving forward: “We’re in playoff mode. We’ve got to take care of business or else we have no shot. This one, we’ve got to take it on the chin. It’s a short week. It’s Christmas week. We’ve got to focus on Carolina and figure out a way to win.”

Notably, Tampa’s next game is against the Carolina Panthers (4-11) on Sunday, December 29. The kickoff will be on 1 PM EST. Having said that, for Mayfield, the goal is clear, “We just have to step up. Young guys have to move on, learn from this and it’s on to Carolina. If we don’t take care of business, we won’t be in the playoffs.”
