Did Jerry Jones just prove all the doubters wrong with Trey Lance's stellar performance?

The Dallas Cowboys situation recently has been all over the place. From contract uncertainties with Dak Prescott, and CeeDee Lamb to Jerry Jones’ controversial remarks and now Trey Lance’s position in the team, the Cowboys have a lot going on. To better summarize the latter, we might have to look at the RaidersCowboys preseason game where Trey Lance absolutely demolished the Las Vegas team and in doing so, got Jerry Jones’ respect.

After watching the spectacle, America’s team’s owner realized why the 49ers went through so much trouble to draft Trey Lance three years ago. 105.3 The Fan did a pregame show and invited the business mogul where he revealed his plans for Trey Lance and showered praises on him. Check out this post from Jon Machota on X.

“He’s a great athlete. If we were really trying to win a game during the season, there’d be a different game plan. And you’d use his legs a lot. … You’re gonna see Trey tonight working out of the pocket, working on his footwork. … I can see why San Francisco gave three ones to draft him,” said the Cowboys owner of Trey Lance.

Lance was drafted 3 overall in 2021 and the SF team gave away three first-round picks in exchange. Turned out, it was a bad gamble as Lance ended up playing 8 games in his two years with the San Francisco 49ers. Though he looked promising when he scored 5 touchdowns over 603 yards, having played only 6 games, he was traded because the Niners wanted to put all their chips on Brock Purdy.

Things started going downhill for Lance since he left the 49ers. That’s because he never really played in the Cowboys’ regular season and was a third-string QB who was only utilized during practice. But he might be free from all the blemishes in his past after the performance he put up against the Las Vegas Raiders in the second preseason game.

The Cowboys won 27-13, thanks to Lance, who put up 151 yards, completed 15 of his 23 passes and even had a touchdown. What Jerry Jones said about using Trey Lance’s legs somehow stood true in the preseason game. Lance recorded 7 carries over 34 yards and even had a rushing touchdown. However, despite getting all the love from Jerry Jones, Trey Lance is facing some trouble trying to maintain his career in the league.

This might be Trey Lance’s last year with the Dallas Cowboys. They had an option of picking him up on a 5-year deal but declined to do so. If the Cowboys had done that, they would have had to cough up $22 million (fully guaranteed), which, given their current trajectory with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, is not possible.

The Cowboys are in the most peculiar position right now. That’s because Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, and Trey Lance will all hit free agency in March and we don’t have a way of knowing who’s going to stay. Despite Lance not taking a single snap in the 2023 regular season, the Cowboys owner was very optimistic about Lance, per his last presser in March.

“The arrow’s really up,” Jones said. “He’s exceeded expectations as a person, as a worker, as a character. He’s got unique skills. He’s very much what we had planned on, hoped. When we gave the pick, we knew we would be paying the bonus right now. That was a part of the same decision. That’s been reinforced by what he’s been with the team and the person he is, potentially the player.”

However, in the same presser, Jones declared that due to ongoing negotiations with Prescott, holding on to these quarterbacks would become a jarring task in the future. Though Jones thinks that Lance is a “great addition” to their arsenal, the $22 million price point is still a huge question mark. That’s because though Lance is with the Cowboys, the Niners are paying his last year’s salary of $5.31 million. What do you think will happen to Trey Lance next year? Let us know in the comments.
