The last few weeks have been full of confusion. LB Micah Parsons requested the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to become aggressive in the free agency and the 2025 draft. Since then, many analysts claimed that the linebacker could be on the way out via a trade. It looked like it could happen—after all, no one questions or pushes Jerry Jones in his house. But hold your horses! The owner-and-GM’s son and Cowboys director of player personnel, Stephen Jones, has thrown a pleasant surprise.

During a February 23 interview with The Dallas Morning News, Jones claimed that they are ready to sit down at the negotiation table with the LB. He said, “I don’t know the exact timing of that, so I don’t want to get out over my skis there.” But when the interviewer asked if they would certainly hold extension talks, he replied in affirmative and added, “Oh yes.” That’s promising.

While Jerry Jones is silent, he also wouldn’t want to lose the great 25-year-old defensive player. In 4 years, Parsons has played 63 games for the franchise, recording 52.5 sacks, 256 tackles (172 solo), and 112 QB hits. But in case the talks don’t go out well, other franchises are interested in him.

The Raiders, Eagles, and Bills are raring to sign him if he enters free agency. Mystery shrouds the extension, as we have seen Jerry Jones extending talks for months. Last year, he had almost entire off-season long talks with WR CeeDee Lamb before signing him up just days before the season.

America’s Team needs some solidity in the defense line. They need all the departments sorted out and have priorities for the free agency and the draft. They are clearing out financial hurdles.

Jerry Jones restructures Dak Prescott’s contract

It comes against the backdrop of the Cowboys front office comments that they will restructure QB Dak Prescott‘s contract. To mitigate the league-high $89.8 million cap hit, they have converted the $42 million guaranteed 2025 salary into a signing bonus.

Last year, Jerry Jones signed a 4-year $240 million deal with $231 million guaranteed. But that leaves Dallas with very limited breathing space. His performance this year was also below average. In 8 games, he had a 3-5 win-loss record, with 185 of 286 passes (64.7% completion rate) for 1,978 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Spotrac’s Mike Ginniti claimed that Jerry Jones has been following the same strategy for years. He mentioned, “We’re still paying dues on the last contract, which rolled into this contract when they extended him last offseason.” But they need to clear up the cap situation for the current offseason first.

That should clear up some space to give Parsons that $24 million for his one-year extension on his rookie contract and negotiate for more quality on the team. It would be interesting to see the team they assemble to end the 3-decade Super Bowl drought. That wait, at least, is getting exhausting.
