As questions continue to hover around Mike McCarthy’s future in Dallas. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may have revealed his preference for a possible coaching change down the line. And their former TE Jason Witten has seemingly caught Jones’ eye as he gushes over his work ethic on 105.3 The Fans.
Making a bold prediction on Witten, Jerry believes the 42-year-old has the qualities to become an NFL coach someday. He even compared him to the current Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, who himself played as a TE. “Yes. Without hesitation. He has something that you can’t draw up. He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detriot right now.” Well, Jones didn’t only compare him to Campbell. As he pointed out the qualities that could make Jason a top coach in future.
“Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances. But more important than anything, he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it. Without a question, he could become an NFL coach. He has an extraordinary work ethic. He can be a top coach.” Although Jones has weighed in behind Witten’s possible success as a head coach in the NFL, right now, he is far away from those dreams.

The only coaching experience Witten has on his resume is the head coach position he holds at Liberty Christian School in Texas. Witten has a steep ladder to climb before getting the chance to manage his former team in the NFL. Even if he finds success with college franchises or any other coaching roles in the NFL, Jones may hand him the keys to his franchise in the near future.

And it wouldn’t be the first time Jerry would have put one of his former players in charge of Dallas. As their former QB, Jason Garrett was head coach for a decade under Jones’ ownership. However, such talk does throw shade on Mike McCarthy’s position, who remains on thin ice as the Cowboys fell to their sixth defeat in just 9 games.

Only eight games remain, and 55 days remain before the Cowboys’ season ends this year. And it could depend on their results in the following weeks. On whether they would make it to the postseason or go out in the regular season itself. It would be the first time since 2020 that the Cowboys are on track to lose out on a playoff berth this season.

However, Jerry Jones still remains adamant that he is not going to change head coaches mid-season, “I don’t believe we’ll make a coaching change during the season.” Under McCarthy’s acumen, the Cowboys have made the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. However, they didn’t manage to make it past the divisional rounds once. And with McCarthy’s contract expiring in the summer, Jones may not have to pull the plug right away.
He is still busy analyzing every game this season, “My criteria has always been. How we’re playing. Do we have an edge? Are we fundamentally competitive? Are we competitive when we’re down? Those kind of things.” Well, the answer to all questions would be a huge NO, as the Cowboys have been on a downward spiral ever since the season started. With their signal-caller, Dak Prescott, heading to the injury reserves. Their chances of grabbing a playoff spot grow thinner every week. It’s still highly unlikely that McCarthy can turn his sinking ship around amid the injuries all over the roster.
