With the uncertainty surrounding Trevon Diggs’ constant troubles with injuries and Jourdan Lewis’ move to the Jaguars. The Cowboys are in desperate need of a reliable cornerback. Someone who can not only keep those receivers under control. While reading the opposition QB’s plays before they even happen to get a few interceptions under his belt. It’s about creating that terror in the QB’s mind, which will prevent him from targeting his wideouts as he pleases. Well, it seems the Cowboys may have identified whom they need to lock down opposition offenses through sick defensive maneuvers.

After The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler initially tweeted that the Dallas Cowboys will host East Carolina DB Shavon Revel Jr for a 30 visit next week. Looks like Revel Jr. ended up having a good time meeting the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Shavon’s father, Keith Revel, was found gushing, seeing his son hanging out with Jones. On X, Keith was captured proudly showing off his son’s linkup with the Cowboys GM, “My Son @ShavonRevel hanging out with the Goat,” wrote in his post.

See, Revel getting a chance to meet Jones wasn’t just a regular visit for soon-to-be NFL rookies. Instead, it could be more than that. Revel is coming off an East Carolina tenure that saw his highest of highs and lowest of lows. As a junior for the Pirates, Revel earned an All-American Conference honoree after breaking up 12 passes in 2023. But last season, after returning a 50-yard interception, his first career pick six against Appalachian State. Revel’s season abruptly ended after suffering a torn ACL.

And coincidentally, the one who did his surgery was Dr. Daniel Cooper, a team physician for the Cowboys. So, considering Cooper has already given Jones some insider information on Revel. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Cowboys do pick him up in round 2, probably at No.44. With his incredible athleticism and wingspan to jam the line of scrimmage, Revel could be an instant hit in the Cowboys’ secondary.

But right now, it’s all up to the Cowboys whether they want to draft Revel, who could be a steal. While the Cowboys were busy meeting their probable next defensive star, it seems their coach has revealed their NFL draft approach.

Brian Schottenheimer offers hints into the Cowboys’ draft plans

Two days ago, the Cowboys’ new head coach gave a sneak peek at what to expect from the Cowboys in this year’s draft. Speaking with The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Schottenheimer said, “You’re looking for guys that can influence the game. How do you influence the game? You rush the quarterback, and you get sacks, strip sacks, fumbles, whatever it is. Look at it this way: you built it from the outside in. So you’ve got corners, receivers, they get isolated one-on-one. Pass rushers, tackles, they get isolated one-on-one.” Judging by Schottenheimer’s comments on the Cowboys’ draft approach.

It wouldn’t be a total surprise if the Cowboys try and target receivers like Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan or Texas’s Matthew Golden. Their arrival in Dallas would give some healthy competition to CeeDee Lamb—the Cowboys’ undisputed WR1. And if you look at the probabilities of the Cowboys targeting defensive backs. Shavon Revel is already on their radar, as he could instantly come in and elevate the Cowboys’ secondary.

Also, considering advanced metrics like WAR (Wins Above Replacement) that suggests, “The further away from the ball a player plays. the more valuable they appear to be. After quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs and tight ends have the highest WAR,” as per Pro Football Focus. So, once the Cowboys are on the clock in Green Bay, try not to act surprised if they do bring a receiver or a defensive back like Revel as their top pick in 2025.
