The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets are similar in a way. Both play blame games rather than rectifying the real problem. But unlike the Jets, the Dallas Cowboys might not fire the head coach Mike McCarthy mid-season. People might think that Jerry Jones wouldn’t want his money to go to waste, but the reason might be something else entirely.
Truth of the matter is that the America’s team’s owner has only fired one head coach in the middle of the season and that’s Wade Phillips. And even in doing so, the billionaire wasn’t happy. After all, he was “great” to Phillips and his family when his father, Bum Phillips, passed away. That benevolent nature of Jerry Jones might save Mike McCarthy from getting sacked. That’s what Jordan Schultz, the NFL Insider, thinks.
Jerry Jones’ history with his head coaches

Jones cannot fire Dak Prescott or CeeDee Lamb since he’s shelled nearly half a billion dollars on them. The NFL Insider predicted the next course of action for the Cowboys, who have now lost four games in a row. Make no mistake, Mike McCarthy might be on the hot seat, but the Cowboys owner might wait till the end of this season.
“Jerry Jones has only fired a head coach once in-season. One time. It was Jason Garrett about decade and a half ago,” Schultz said on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “He always said, ‘I never wanted to do that, I almost regretted it.’ So, to fire Mike McCarthy in season at three and six, I don’t really see that. But I do see a team that even before Dak was lost for the season was completely rudderless.”
There’s a small inconsistency in Shultz’s take because it wasn’t Jason Garrett, it was Wade Phillips that Jones fired back in 2010 after their 1-7 start. Phillips had a 34-22 record in his 4-year head coaching career as the Cowboys HC. And Jones was lamenting his decision of in-season firing.
“I’ve changed coaches in the season with Wade and have always regretted it,” Jones said. “As a matter of fact, I made a change with Chan Gailey after two years. I regretted that. That’s not enough. You need to give yourself a chance. I’ve had a lot more rope than that in my time. I haven’t had anybody pull it short on me.”

Is Jerry Jones' loyalty to Mike McCarthy a strength or a weakness for the Cowboys?
Have an interesting take?
McCarthy is in his fifth year as the Cowboys head coach and currently holds a 45-31 record as the head coach. In 2020, when Dak Prescott fractured his ankle, the Cowboys went 6-10. Though Prescott has suffered another season ending injury this year, the Cowboys’ performance has been an eyesore since the start of the season.
But props to Jerry Jones, he has always taken a stand for his head coaches, no matter how good or bad they’ve performed. Mike McCarthy is no exception.
Will Mike McCarthy get fired?

To answer this in a simple manner: No. Mike McCarthy won’t get fired this season. The Cowboys head coach signed a 5-year deal with the team back in 2020. He gets paid around $4-$7 million per season, according to various reports. So, this is his last year with the Cowboys and that might be the reason why Jerry Jones wants to see it through.
“Mike is a heck of a coach, a great coach in my mind,” Jones said, per The Athletic. “[He] has and should have the opportunity to do better than we’re playing right now. I haven’t had good experience changing coaches in the middle of the season.”

Let’s be honest here, after Prescott’s exit, Mike McCarthy would have to pull off some sort of miracle to revive the Dallas Cowboys. That’s not happening any times soon. With the current head coach, the Dallas team has finished with a 12-5 record in the last three seasons. That streak is broken now.
