Is Jerry Jones' loyalty to Mike McCarthy a sign of wisdom or stubbornness?

It’s a weird one—this 2024 season so far. The teams have taken up a no-nonsense way of handling things. If a coach can not bring in the Ws he’s gotta go. But amidst all this chaos, the Cowboys are still on to Mike McCarthy despite a 3-5 start. Hmm, indeed, it’s very weird. But Jerry Jones has addressed the issue with a little more patience than Cowboys Nation might want to see right now.

In classic Jerry Jones fashion, he’s got plenty to say about his head coach. “I’m good with Mike. I know how hard he works. I like his football mind,” Jones shared. And just like that, you can practically hear Cowboys fans groaning.

Sure, McCarthy’s record isn’t glittering right now, but Jones is looking at the bigger picture. He sees McCarthy’s fire, the respect from the players, and an “outstanding coaching record.” As far as Jerry’s concerned, there’s more to this than a few rough games.

Jones even went so far as to mention the Cowboys’ rocky days under Jimmy Johnson. Remember the one-win season of ‘89? He’s been down this road before, and it led to Super Bowls. “I’ve had good experience with staying with it,” Jones said, like a guy who knows the end game.

So, Cowboys Nation—love it or hate it—looks like McCarthy isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Mike McCarthy’s putting the Cowboys under the firing line

What’s your perspective on:

Is Jerry Jones' loyalty to Mike McCarthy a sign of wisdom or stubbornness?

Have an interesting take?

That might be Mike McCarthy’s tactics to save himself—get put the players under the lens and not take responsibility—as many fans have vented their frustrations over the HC’s pressers. Guess McCarthy’s strategy of throwing his players under the bus has run its course. After Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, McCarthy pointed fingers at the “self-inflicted wounds,” penalties, and mistakes, leaving fans scratching their heads. You’d think after a few seasons, he might shoulder some of the blame himself, right?

McCarthy said, “It’s tough to win games with that many mistakes.” But, hold on—aren’t these issues the coaching staff should be fixing? Dallas ranks second in the league for false starts, and they’re averaging nearly eight penalties a game. So, the question is when these problems become a coaching issue, not just a player issue.

Now, add the questionable play calling to this overcooked food. Yeah, that’s a recipe for a food you wouldn’t want to touch. These are on McCarthy’s playbook, not his players. With every odd call, fans are asking if he’s losing his grip on the team. But it seems Jerry Jones wants more of this food (whatever it is that McCarthy is cooking).

However, with McCarthy in the final year of his contract, his long-term future with the Cowboys looks shaky. Jones says this “will put a fire in his belly,” but will that be enough to save McCarthy’s job? Only time will tell. For now, the focus is on whether that’d be enough for the Cowboys to start their playoffs charge.
