With a disappointing run this year, a group of Dallas fans were almost convinced that special teams coordinator, John Fassel, would be a good interim head coach for them. After all, let us not forget that he has previously been in such a role with the Los Angeles Rams in 2016. However, the Dallas Cowboys have now lost him as the Titans hired him and publicly announced their decision on January 20, 2025. But things could get worse.

Their key weapon, placekicker Brandon Aubrey, emerged as a potent player for the franchise. In his rookie year in 2023, he made many NFL records. In the week 15 game against the Eagles, he became the first player to score two 59+ yard field goals in a single game. That shows his power but he made a bombshell revelation, claiming Fassel called him and wanted to bring him to the Titans.

In an interview with ‘The Dumbzone’, the athlete stated, “He told me he is going to try and trade for me. So I don’t know if that’s out of any sort of reality or what not, but he is a great dude and we are going to miss him. He is going to miss us and you can actually tell that he genuinely means that.”

The 6′ 3″, 218 pounds Notre Dame player has emerged as an important player for the Cowboys. Here are a few of the records he has made in just two seasons with the Cowboys.

  • The first kicker in NFL history to score at least 10 field goals of 50 or more yards in consecutive seasons.
  • Most field goals made of at least 50 yards in a season (14 in 2024).

Not only that, Brandon Aubrey also registered his name in the team’s record book. During the week 3 game against the Ravens, he scored the longest successful field goal with a 65-yard FG. And he even broke his rookie record of 36 FGs in 2023 with 40 FGs in 2024. Jerry Jones’s locker room often calls his range “unlimited”.

Aubrey impressed Fassel since he first saw him. Before moving to the Titans, he praised the kicker and said, “I think he’s damn good. I think he’s the very best in the league… Proud of him. He’s really good, man.” Considering the impact he has, it would be a colossal blow if he leaves the Cowboys. However, there are other things the team needs to focus on.

For instance, Jerry Jones’s choice of the new head coach surprised everyone. There were big names in the discussion, but the talks failed and in the end, he promoted his offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.

Dak Prescott favors Jerry Jones’s choice for the head coach…

Amid this drama, ESPN’s Todd Archer made a revelation. He revealed that the Cowboys’ new HC Brian Schottenheimer has a good relationship with all the people in the building, including the QB Dak Prescott. And the signal-caller supports the new coach’s hiring. That played a huge role in helping him land the job.

Now while Mike McCarthy was the offensive play-caller during Schottenheimer’s stint with the Cowboys as the OC, Archer also stated that some insiders believe it was the latter who pushed ahead the schematic changes that turned their offense around after a slow start in 2023.

The team ranked fifth in total offense and also the first in scoring offense in 2023. They had gone 12-5 and also won the NFC East title.

While owner Jerry Jones is waiting to end the three-decade Super Bowl drought, nothing has worked in their favor till now. This includes Prescott’s hamstring injury, which sidelined him and he is still recovering. With a 7-10 win-loss record, the Cowboys secured the 12th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

However, the biggest question still looms: Will Jerry Jones give the new HC some space to implement ideas? That is the required change if they want to go for the big prize and QB Prescott will have a huge role in that as well. Also, here’s the thing:

Brian Schottenheimer is the son of the late Marty Schottenheimer, whose 200 regular-season wins are the most in NFL history (that’s for a coach who never won a championship). The father-son duo have more than 50 combined years as NFL coaches, but neither could serve a team that eventually reached the Super Bowl.
