Is Jerry Jones' loyalty to McCarthy a sign of wisdom or a recipe for disaster?

As the Cowboys were falling in the Week 11 game against the Texans, head coach Mike McCarthy’s heart was pumping loudly. The tension was clearly seen on his face till the end of the game from the start when the Texans had a seven-point lead against Dallas’s 0. Now with 7 losses and just 3 wins, will the 61-year-old coach survive in the team of Jerry Jones?

It’s no doubt that Mike McCarthy is like a dead man walking. Although Jerry Jones has confirmed not to fire the HC in between the seasons, his contract extension might hold out his future ties with the franchise. But why? Given that some other teams like the Jets have already moved away with their former coach, the Cowboys too can.

But Jerry Jones is waiting! Why? Well, it’s because, as per his version: “I worry a lot about execution. I worry a lot about communication in the (offensive) line. Also about having two people in the same spot on routes. I worry a lot about all that stuff. But guys giving the effort out? (No.) You don’t need to worry about anybody in that locker room giving everything they got and more.

In addition to that, he also cited the reason why he doesn’t want to change the roster in between the seasons: “I have made a change early on a coach with Chan Gailey, and I’ve always regretted that, and I’ve made a change during the season [with Wade Phillips] and regretted that, and that’s the music I’m listening to.” This is evident in the statement of Michael Irvin, who once said that Gailey “didn’t manage people well during his time.” Even Phillips gave 1 win in eight games in 2010. Hence, the idea is clear! Jones doesn’t just want to take action in a hurry. He wants to sleep on his thoughts and then make a final decision about anyone on the team.

For now, he is sticking with Mike McCarthy, as well as with quarterback Cooper Rush over Trey Lance, in the absence of injured Dak Prescott. Why? It’s because Rush gives them the best chance to win games.

Jerry Jones is supporting Cooper Rush over Trey Lance?

Dak Prescott is done with the season with his season-ending hamstring avulsion. In his place, Mike McCarthy has chosen Cooper Rush. But is Rush worth it? The 30-year-old veteran QB is holding onto the starting spot for the Cowboys for now, and there’s a reason why. As per Jerry Jones, “Cooper has shown that he has the capability to compete and win in games. He does give us our best chance.

Well, it’s not just talk – Rush has proven that he can deliver. With a 5-1 record in his first six starts, including an impressive streak as the first Cowboy QB to win his first five games, he’s earned that trust. But here’s the catch: This season hasn’t started well for him.

Rush’s first game in 2024 was rough. Only 13 completions, 45 yards, and just six points on the board. If that doesn’t change soon, Trey Lance might get his chance. For now, the Cowboys are risking on experience, familiarity, and Rush’s past success to guide them through Prescott’s absence.
