Is Jerry Jones too loyal to McCarthy, or is a change desperately needed for the Cowboys?

Somebody’s job in the Dallas Cowboys organization is in danger after Jerry Jones’ team was blown out by the Detroit Lions in a 47-9 game. It would have been fine on any other day, but it’s the billionaire’s 82nd birthday, and the last gift he was hoping to receive was an embarrassing home game loss.

The last time such a thing happened was with the New York Jets. The loss in London led Woody Johnson to quickly fire Robert Saleh. Is Mike McCarthy in for the same surprise? People can’t help but speculate about the future possibilities of personnel changes in the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys owner spoke to the media and made his plans clear.

There might be some changes in team personnel, but Jones is not sure whether firing McCarthy would do any good. Jon Machota summarized the billionaire’s words in a recent couple of posts on X. One of his posts said, “Cowboys owner Jerry Jones when asked about a coaching change: ‘I’m not considering that.’”

But this post was in reply to another one about making personnel or coaching changes to his team. That post from Machota read, “Cowboys owner Jerry Jones when asked about potential personnel or coaching changes: ‘I’m not ready to talk about changes right now.’”

The Cowboys owner recently mentioned that he’s saving the best for last. He was talking about saving Ezekiel Elliott for later down the line, but the 3-3 record says that there’s no time for that anymore. If anything, this was a “shocker” to the Cowboys owner, who shelled out nearly $400 million on Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

“This was very concerning, and it was very humbling, and I felt bad because of all of our great fans, and especially the ones at the stadium, and certainly the ones that are all about the Cowboys. So we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Jones said. “I’m glad we got this bye week coming up here. It’ll give everybody an opportunity to get out and actually practice. Practice what it is that takes you to be more successful than a game like this. This was a shocker.”

Have an interesting take?

Yeah, “shocker” might not have been the best verbiage to use in this scenario. The blowout loss might not have been so unexpected for many people. Let’s check some facts and figures from this game.

Jerry Jones has a lot to worry about

Perhaps Aidan Hutchinson’s injury fired up the Lions to do better. But this abysmal loss might also have something to do with Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence’s absence from the game. This makes it the fourth consecutive game that the Dallas Cowboys have lost since the NFC playoffs last season.

The Cowboys didn’t score a touchdown today. Dak Prescott completed 17 of his 33 passes for 178 yards. He also threw two interceptions, one of which nearly led to a pick-six. The Dallas defense allowed the Lions to rack up 492 total yards, and the Detroit team managed 7.5 yards per play. What’s more shocking is that CeeDee Lamb had 7 receptions for 89 yards.

The loss was embarrassing, to say the least. Prescott will have a good hard look at himself in the mirror, watch some film over the bye week, and attempt to bounce back and improve the 3-3 record. The Dallas QB will try to dial his performance up a notch.

“We’ve got to get better — simply, simply,” Prescott explained. “And obviously, going into the bye week, I mean we’re 3-3 after six games and with a long season to go. I’ve been in worse situations, I guess you can say in terms and when we got it going, teams that got on the streak, I think about 2018 that, yeah, it is about us sticking together.”

It might be hard to stick together because some of the Cowboys might already be losing patience. One of those players is CeeDee Lamb, who had a few things to say to Prescott in the last game. Also, the onus is on Jerry Jones to do whatever he can to make his team better in the middle of the season.
