The New England Patriots are pretty consistently inconsistent this season. And that has yet again raised a new set of questions. This time, it’s about their backup QB Jacoby Brissett’s captaincy. Well, the brief period in which he was thrown on the gridiron to replace rookie QB Drake Maye after he was concussed. Brissett was captured without a C patch on his jersey. Now, it led to multiple questions being raised on whether Brissett has lost his captaincy after losing his starting berth to Drake Maye.
Whatever those rumors are, Jerod Mayo had a pretty straightforward answer, “No. He’s still a captain.” Mayo didn’t offer much of an explanation as to why Brissett didn’t have the C patch on him. But the thing is, the Patriots, unlike their results, have been quite consistent in changing their captains this season.

They started off with a pair of captains that had David Andrews and Ja’Whaun Bentley within the group. However, when they were ruled out with season-ending injuries, the Patriots started changing their captains. That armband also landed in the hands of Jabrill Peppers. But the moment he had legal troubles, the Pats revoked his captaincy. As the 29-year-old said at the start of December, “That was a mutual decision between me and Mayo. I’m going to just leave it at that.”
While Peppers would be upset to lose his captaincy for off-field matters, think about how Brissett would feel if he had really lost his captaincy. Because the 31-year-old was over the moon when he heard his name as captain, “It was definitely a surprise, for sure, but definitely something I don’t take for granted.” It seems like his whole world has come crashing down after losing his place to Drake Maye on offense.
But who knows? Maybe Brissett will start another game before the Patriots season ends in January. With Maye’s concussion in week 17, Mayo has a decision to make ahead of their Bills game.

Jerod Mayo on QB dilemma to end their nightmarish season
In a season full of controversial and questionable decisions. Foxborough is looking forward to one last decision from their successor to Bill Belichick. On Monday morning, he was asked to express his thoughts on resting Drake Maye for their meaningless season finale, “I would say right now, everything is in consideration. We’ll see how the week goes.” So, judging from Mayo’s answer, he is open to all possibilities. It could be either his No.3 overall draft pick or once-starter Jacoby Brissett.
Considering Maye suffered his second head injury of the season. Mayo could make a precautionary approach and protect New England’s future. Or he could give their fans something to cheer about by finishing on a high against their divisional foes. But if they chose the latter, that would be more damaging for the franchise. Well, after the Giants’ upset win over the Colts in week 17. The Pats have the No.1 overall draft pick locked up for next season.

A win over the Bills in week 18 would mean relinquishing that spot and dropping to somewhere around No.4. And it would be a huge loss in their chance to improve next season. They already have a QB in Drake Maye, so what they need is his support cast, which includes receivers or tight ends. Right now, it remains to be seen how Jerod Mayo wants to end his first season. Either way, it will remain a dark chapter in the Patriots’ glorified history.
