On Maye’s UNC pro day, the Patriots’ Quarterback Drake Maye missed a throw that bothered him. But after finishing the rest successfully, he returned to redo the missed throw, demonstrating his commitment to improvement and willingness to settle for the best.

Maye’s mindset impressed Jerod Mayo, and he expects Drake to bring positive changes to the team. In a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Patriots‘ Head Coach Jerod Mayo discussed the plans for Drake Maye. The HC also mentioned one of the NFL legends while comparing the new QB with other players.

When the host mentioned that Drake Maye was the franchise’s first top-10 draft choice since Jerod’s selection. Jerod stated, “Absolutely, there have been very special teams around here for a long time, and we’re just trying to get back to where we’ve been in the past. It starts with the draft; we believe in drafting and developing.”

When Mayo was asked which player Drake is like, Mayo said that it’s difficult to say, as Drake is a great leader and competitive with a strong arm, but the easy answer might be to compare him to Tom Brady. Regarding his plans for Drake, Jerod explained, “My plan for Drake is to get him in the building, around the offensive staff, and not overload him, especially early on. Ultimately, he still has to earn the starting job, and we’re not just going to give it away. We’ll see what happens.”

Jerod’s comments indicate that the Patriots see potential in Drake Maye but understand the importance of patience and competition in determining the starting quarterback. However, not only Mayo, Drake himself is also very confident about his potential.

Jerod and Drake’s approach to leading the Patriots

Maye said, “As the youngest brother, I never want to give people the satisfaction that I’m comfortable with failing.” Mayo appreciates this attitude in him, saying, “That’s exactly what I want to hear.”

The Patriots are working on fixing the franchise and they know that it’s not a quick fix. Mayo wants to lead with a straightforward approach in order to guide his team. He even said to the new signee Osborn, “I’m not saying it’s Super Bowl or bust because it’s not… But we want to methodically put together a team that can sustain, win tight games and play complementary football.”

Mayo, previously the Patriots’ inside LB coach, understands the frustration defensive players felt with the offense’s struggles. He believes addressing this issue with Maye’s addition will lead the team to success. Drake himself is all set for the challenge and take up the responsibility that comes with it. He said, “As the quarterback of this football team, and possibly the face of the franchise and team, everything falls on me. I embrace that.” Will Drake bring back the Tom Brady era in the Patriots? Only the future holds an answer to that!
