Brandon Aiyuk snubs Patriots—Is New England no longer an attractive destination for top talent?

Whenever anyone thinks about Tom Brady, the New England Patriots dynasty instantly comes to mind. From 2001 to 2019, The Pats ruled the NFL as they played 9 Super Bowls and won 6. In 2020, the GOAT left the franchise, after which their downfall started. They haven’t qualified for playoffs since 2020 (barring 2021 when the Buffalo Bills defeated them in playoffs). Veteran coach Bill Belichick left after 2023, and they couldn’t find a perfect coach for revival. Ahead of the 2024 season, they hired their inside linebackers coach since 2019, Jerod Mayo, as their head coach. The franchise went on a trading spree to bring talent to the team. However, skilled players are refusing to join.

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is looking for a move to a good franchise. Reportedly, the Patriots offered a $32 million contract to the WR. However, he denied that offer, claiming the Pats quarterback situation was not perfect for him. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini revealed, “He does not believe the quarterback position is at the level that he wants it to be at right now, and he wants to be on a team that he believes can make a run in the playoffs. He doesn’t see New England as being that type of team.” This has rubbed the Patriots coach in a wrong way.

Talking about the situation, Mayo acknowledged the team’s deteriorating condition. He said they needed to change their roster and added, “When we start to win games, guys will want to come here. When we establish the culture, the roster, guys will be excited.” While it may be easy to say, the task is herculean. Without any renowned QB on the roster, the franchise is looking to improve their last season’s performance, let alone qualify for playoffs.

The Pats have 4 QBs in their current roster: Drake Maye, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Milton, and Bailey Zippe. While Maye and Milton were signed in the 2024 NFL draft, Zippe didn’t produce the expected results in the last 2 seasons. Out of desperation, they brought Brissett, who played under Brady in the 2016 season. From these four, Maye and Brissett are competing against each other for being the starter QB.

The rookie QB impressed during his college season with 3,608 passing yards and 24 touchdowns with 149 passer ratings. He was initially rusty during the training camp. However, he showed improvements as the camp progressed. Brissett, on the other hand, has played for many teams and will be representing Pats in his 9th NFL season. During the training camp, he had a 68.5% passing percentage with 4 interceptions. Being a seasoned campaigner, he looks more in a position to lead the rebuild.

Several offensive players, including WR DeMario Douglas, are also in favor of Brissett. They have more confidence in Brady’s teammate. With the season less than a month away, Jerod Mayo will have to make a solid plan and execute it to perfection. Only then, the team will be able to regain the fading popularity.
