Did Coach Ulbrich's decision cost the Jets the game, or was it just bad luck?

The New York Jets were handed another loss of the season, this time by the Indianapolis Colts. However, the final half of the game definitely left everyone scratching their heads, even Gang Green’s quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Jets scored a touchdown. Rodgers thought they’d go for a two-point conversion to widen their lead to 25-16. Instead, they made a different call, leaving many, including Aaron Rodgers perplexed. It highlighted some confusion in the decision-making, as even the four-time MVP said in the post-game presser: “The reason I was thinking is because we had a conversation on the sideline. And I was under the impression the decision was before the drive, we were going to go for two.”

But Aaron Rodgers was confused. If you ask coach Jeff Ulbrich, he might have a different answer for that. While speaking to the media, Ulbrich said, “I was just comfortable being up by 8.” He further added, “Yeah, and as the series went, just became more comfortable with going up by eight at that point.

The 47-year-old interim coach believed it was enough cushion at that moment in the game with an 8-point lead. As the series progressed, his comfort with the decision grew. He stood by the choice to keep the lead at 8 instead of taking a risk for more. This although shows his trust in the team, the Jets lost the game again.

The Jets faced a crushing one-point loss, and it seemed confusion played a big role. After scoring a touchdown to go up 24-16, they chose to kick an extra point instead of attempting a two-point conversion. This decision caught even quarterback Aaron Rodgers off guard. Rodgers said he was under the impression throughout the drive that the team planned to go for two points. However, something changed, and he wasn’t clearly informed.

Aaron Rodgers even admitted that he was confused when he saw signals for just one point. Well, this hesitation surely highlighted a communication breakdown between him and coach Jeff Ulbrich. Nevertheless, the decision to go for one point left the door open for the Colts. They capitalized with a late game-winning touchdown by Anthony Richardson in the final minute.

The loss was a tough blow, dropping the Jets to 3-8 on the season and extending their slump to seven losses in their last eight games. Now the team is heading to their Bye Week, and Ulbrich has a message for the locker room.
