It’s safe to say—that, for now, the Commanders have truly struck gold in Jayden Daniels. Like this year’s No.2 overall draft pick didn’t just help Washington break their postseason drought that went for nearly 7000 days with a win over the Bucs. He has truly set the league on fire as a QB of color. Before Jayden Daniels’ prominence in the NFL, the black community of QBs never really found themselves in the spot they are in this season.

This would be the first time in the NFL’s 104-year history that Daniels and six other black QBs are slated to start for their respective franchises in the playoffs. See, it wouldn’t have been possible without Daniels because last season’s record was 6. However, with Jayden, that number has eclipsed last year’s record. And the updated list also includes Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, C.J. Stroud, Russell Wilson, Jalen Hurts, and Jordan Love.

So, witnessing this historic event couldn’t have made former Commanders QB Doug Williams prouder. He has been a vocal advocate of black QBs since he etched his name in the NFL record books as the first-ever QB of color to start and win a Lombardi. “I’ve been waiting for it to get to this point, where it’s not about the color of your skin but about that opportunity that guys get now. That’s the most important thing—people are now giving them a fair shake to play. That’s what’s happening today,” as per Williams.

Now, things could get even better if both Hurts and Mahomes make the Super Bowl. It would mark the first time ever two black QBs would face off against each other on the biggest stage. And you know what? Records aren’t just limited to the Super Bowl for the black community. Just in case Jayden Daniels picks up the Offensive Rookie of the Year. And elsewhere, Lamar Jackson wins his 3rd NFL MVP. That would mean yet another W for the community of color. This league has never witnessed two black QBs winning MVP and Offensive Rookie of the Year simultaneously.

Well, seeing how things are moving in the positive direction for black QBs. American Professor Jeremi Duru feels it’s a “forced change” for some franchises out there.

America’s Professors puts NFL franchises on notice with black QB dominance

Those days are gone when NFL owners seemingly neglected black QBs. Instead, there has been a major shift in how things are getting planned across different franchises. And as per Lou Moore, a historian of African American sports history, he feels that Commanders are the latest example of what black faces are capable of, “What happened in the past is that teams were reluctant to have a black face as the face of the franchise. Teams have gotten more comfortable and have realized the economic benefits, because these guys are wildly popular. We’re seeing it with Washington now. They were down in the dumps for 20 years.”

Like, for real, before the former Heisman Trophy winner came along. The Commanders haven’t won a playoff game since 2006. However, Daniels’ talents were yet again on display in Tampa Bay. Him completing 24 of his 35 passes for 268 yards and 2 TDs helped Washington break their almost two-decade playoff drought. Besides Lou Moore’s explanation of black QBs’ growing influence. Jeremi Duru of American University feels it’s a change that was bound to happen.

There’s been a change in perspective from ownership—a forced change. Those clubs that selected black quarterbacks when others were more reluctant to do it, those clubs developed a competitive advantage,” as per Duru. So, here’s the thing: Can Daniels go the distance and become only the second black QB to ever start and win a Super Bowl? Well, the signs are there, but on his way stands the King of the North, the Detroit Lions.
